On this day in 1971,Duane Allman was killed, and the world lost an amazing musician.
I remember the night, cruising with friends in my 1968 Chevelle SS,and hearing the news on the radio....at the time Duane was starting to gain a larger national audience helped in part by his contribution to Eric Clapton's masterpiece,Layla, and the Allman Brothers Band had been on the road for over two years playing to an ever expanding fan base.
Those who were fortunate enough to have seen Duane and the Brothers will never forget the improvisational jams that were only made possible by the efforts of six talented musicians who lived the lives of brothers on the road, playing true, unaltered music in the vein of the blues and jazz masters who were their inspration.
I never met Duane, but he has had a profound influence on my guitar playing and outlook on life in so many ways....so tonight when I'm playing music with my son's band,we're going to dedicate the gig to his memory, and try to do what he said one time.
"Just rock on and have yourself a good time."

one of our local Blues Bars is hosting its' annual "Jam for Duane" weekend that draws players & bands from all over the U.S. & even a few from Canada & Mexico.

this weekend every year ALL proceeds are split between the musicians......the owner makes nothing for hosting the event....and D's memory is honored.
the bar also has the largest D.A. memorial in the state.

EDIT: RebelSoul....just noticed you're a neighbor.....
come on down & jam......if not this yr, then next !!

Jam for Duane @ Blackstone.....Gadsden Alabama

Here's an early pic of the band from the photo shoot at Rose Hill cemetery where they hung out and played acoustics and wrote songs....this is at the RR near the river behind the cemetery...Duane and Berry are buried here.

I saw the Bros twice with Duane, the first time was Feb '70 at Pappaliski's
here in Dayton, OH. What was so unique about Pappaliski's was that was very small venue, it only held about 100 people, I was only about 30' from Daune.

I had read about the Bros in Rolling Stone, and had brought 'The Allman Brothers Band', but I wasn't prepared for their live show, they were awesome! I wasn't playing guitar than, and was amazed by the sound he got using a small glass bottle on the strings. I don't remember Gregg playing, I think that he had the flu.

I asked him 'what' was he playing, and he told me 'slide guitar'. I had no idea what he was talking about, than. Later in '69 'Layla' was released and remember sitting with headphone on and looking at the inside album jacket and seeing Daune with EC.

Later in '71, I brought 'Live At Fillmore East', I played it to death. Than in Sept '71, they came back to Dayton, but this time at the Hara Arena, a much larger concert complex. That show was even better. Two months later Daune was gone.

My friend had given that Sear's Silvertone guitar, and I was just starting to play guitar, so I was able to understand how he was getting those tones.

After I learnt 'ear training', how to find keys to songs, I actually learnt to play blues by playing with 'Live At Fillmore East' and 'Layla' as well.

I miss him too.

Interesting post Tony!...I think that was one of the big surprises for everyone who had heard the first album and then saw them live, those songs were just blueprints on the album,in concert they took on a life of their own.
I was like you,in '69/'70 when I first heard about Duane and "slide guitar" I thought,HUH?..I had heard some delta blues, but couldn't comprehend that Duane had taken that farther and was getting that sound from a glass bottle,he was the first player I ever saw playing full blown electric slide guitar.
He was just a month shy of turning 25 years old when he died....just a kid,I can't imagine being as good as he was and what we could have been hearing if he had lived.

I was 14 when my brother came home on leave from the Navy with the Anthology Album. I fell in love and was heartbroken at the same time. I got every album the Bro's ever made plus most Duane ever played on as a studio musician. The greatest compliment I ever got was one day in High School I was jammin and somebody called out Duane. I still sit and wonder how great he would have become. Little Martha was just the beginning of a new direction for Him. I sometimes wonder if Duane's spririt lives in Derek Trucks fingers

I have closed my eyes at a Brothers concert, with Dickey Betts and Derek Trucks playing Dreams, and it came really close to sounding like the original band....Derek is a fantastic player.
