I weighted my 2006 R8 VOS plain top and it weighted 9.4 lbs. My 2006 Standard, trans amber, also weights at 9.4 lbs. I thought my R8 was solid mahogany back? Shouldn't it weight much more? My 2006 standard is swiss cheese weight relieved from my understanding.

The density of mahogany varies tremendously. Heavy mahogany has higher mineral content and it's more common, so it's cheaper. They reserve the light stuff for the high end non-weight relieved models.

If your Standard wasn't relieved, it would weigh more like 11~12 pounds.

Back in the '50s they mostly used light mahogany for Les Pauls so they were generally in the 8.5~9.5 lb range.

How does it sound?
Does it sound like it has holes in it?
Just my personal joke.

My les Paul is drilled and is way lighter than 9lb. Lighter than any of my Fenders at around 7lb something

Yup, what he said. Here's a pic of a sign from the wall of the Gibson Custon Shop that I ripped from MyLesPaul.com that shows how they vary in weight considerably and try to organize the weights by model. If you're having second thoughts, let me know before I get a Trad Pro 50 which won't be too long since I'm gassing pretty bad.

My '94 R9 AAAAA flametop tips the scales at just under eight pounds. AFAIK it's not chambered.

No swiss cheese.

interesting....thanks !

beautiful Lesters too!! love the R8 !!

mine's not exactly an R8, it's an '88 (Dealer-Special)"30th Ann. Plaintop", w/a 1-pc.back, and w/o strap it crushes the scales(& every shoulder that lugs it) @ 14.1 Lbs.!
everybody that's played/held it say's it's the heaviest they've ever felt.
I bought it new in 3/89.

nikininja, what year/model is your Les Paul? Most of the 7 lb LPs are chambered.

In the 80's and '90s most LP Stds had "Swiss cheese" weight relief -- a bunch of cylindrical holes drilled in the mahogany. A few years ago they started chambering the Std (and then they introduced the LP Traditional with Swiss cheese weight relief for those who don't like the idea of chambers).

Gibson has a couple of different chamber patterns for LP's. They use this style for Studios and BFG's:

The chamber style in Nevin's post was introduced on the "Cloud 9" models. I haven't found anything definitive about which chamber style is used on the current Standards -- it might be yet another style.

Around here I'm afraid to even touch on the topic of tonal implications. Heavy dense silica-rich mahogany vs light porous mahogany, solid vs Swiss cheese vs chambers. I think they all contribute something to the tone but others disagree.

What neck profile does your Standard have? Do you know if there was a choice of necks for '06 and '07 on the Standard. I've seen ads that say both 60's and 50's profile, I want a 50's profile and am thinking now of looking for a Standard made before the '08 changes.
Still trying to sort through the Gibson fog. Thanks for any help.

Most of my standards have the 50s profile. I have a couple pre 06 standards that have a slimmer 60s profile. My 73' les paul custom and my 77' gold top standard have the slimmest neck profile of the bunch, both pictured below. As I recall, 2006 standards came 50s and 60s neck profile. I prefer the fatter necks. Also, my 70s les pauls have maple necks, three piece maple tops and pancake backs and they are also the heaviest les pauls I own. Over 11 lbs!!!

L-R VM Les Paul Studio 2006 before they chambered this model, 82' Dan Smith Strat with Warmouth coupound radius neck (parents high school graduation gift), 77' Les Paul Standard goldtop, 1989-90 Fender 57' Reissue (purchased her new at GC sherman oks, ca for $700!!)

Sorry to hijack your thread Bluesguy, but I figured I'd keep all the Gibson rubbish in one place. Sometimes you get lucky, today I got lucky. While researching LP's I followed a link to CV Guitars. Larry Corsa is well known and has a good reputation. He's been custom modifying LP's for many years. His website seemed dormant like it hadn't been updated in a long time. I emailed him to ask if he had any guitars available and asked a few questions. He was nice enough to reply with a fairly lengthy response to some of my questions and asked if I wanted to be added to his mailing list. He said he had two guitars available and he was planning on putting them on his site this weekend and notifying his regular customers because some had been waiting for quite some time. One of the guitars is a '07 Standard Faded that he modded for a customer and it was traded in on one of his new Corsa line guitars. Long story short, I checked his site this morning, it was listed, with shaking hands I went through the process, and bingo, I now own an '07 Standard Faded in Tobacco Burst, fully modified to his Peter Green specs that he uses. This picture is not of the guitar I'm getting but a similar one:

Larry is THE DUDE to go to if you want a Greeny/GM LP replica or your LP modded to PG/GM spec.

Gotta say guys, I got great results today from the BKP PG Blues pickups.

Really low powered. The DC resistance is 6.8K neck and 7.2k Bridge. Plenty of singlecoils read higher.

Drew, bang on mate, can't wait to see the guitar. And yes they are chambered, just like Nevin's picture. If you tap round the top you can hear the hollows.
It's no bad thing mate.

Oh and make sure you play with them volume controls on the center position. 8)
I like to drop the volume on the bridge pickup to around 9/8.5 and drop it's tone control all the way down to 4. That seems to keep the honk of the out of phase business. Whilst keeping the sound fat and clear.
It's something to play around with.

Nikki; your guitar is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for the setting tips. I'm pretty stoked, the one I got is LCPG-82. It will probably take a week before it gets across country to me. One verrry long weeeek. Bender, what model is yours, looks like a Standard also.

Drew here's a titbit for you.

Trev Wilkinson put Fleetwood Mac on in late 67. Trev Wilkinson's band supported them. But Trev didn't have an amp. So he asked Greenie if he could use his. Pete Green calls the roadie over, says, "hook him up into my amp".
Despite all the pictures of Vintage Orange and Fender Dual Showman amps. Or the Marshall 50watt combo he used with John Mayal for the Bluesbreakers album. The first amp he used with Fleetwood Mac (on the album with the dustbins on the cover) was a Selmer PA head into Selmer PA column speakers.
(I knew he'd played with Greenie, so I interrogated him, call me Tourquemada)

Exactly like this

Image

Which can still be found for the princely sum of £525 for the head and the cabs. Sadly no speakers in em.
Here
http://www.ampguy.co.uk/sales.htm

They crop up in the States too. Selmer made some great amps. If ever you see a Treble and Bass 100 watt or 50 watt get it. You'll be buying an exact replica of a super lead plexi amp at around a quarter of the price (67-69 ones still only fetch £300-£400 here). The components and wiring are identical.
