I just recently purchased a MIK 89' Squier Strat. It was cheap and good lord it sounds and plays great. Never knew a Squier could sound this good.......although when someone drops 2 SD Alnico II's and a SD Lil Screamin Demon (George Lynch) into any guitar, you're probably going to get a damn good sounding guitar. The fact that this Squier also originally came with Fender Stamped Bridge, blows my mind. OK, so here's my question. One of the tone pots was removed so all I have is 1 volume and 1 tone. What does this hurt if anything? All pickups are attached to the same volume and tone pots. I kinda like it, but damned if I could find a new pickguard with only 2 holes for the strat and I'm wanting to go all black with my pickguard, knobs, and p/u covers. Another question is, I know the guy that did the electronics work on it and he happens to be one of the best luthiers around (if he can find time to get to you because he's always overworked) and I fear if I sent this somewhere else to add a pot, I might lose something that I'm getting out of this guitar now. Any suggestions, comments, or smartass comments are appreciated (I threw in the latter since I know many people hate all Squiers).

Add a killswitch where the other pot was. or add something for show, like an LED or or something. Like one of the light gems off of an amp.

The amp gem would be hilarious. "Dude, is your guitar breaking bread? If not, I think you left a burner on."

Do it. It probably wouldn't be hard to wire it up so it's powered off of the amp.

Contact pickguards.com, If I remember correctly you can order pickguards with a hole left off.

Actually, that really would be quite hard, to say the very least. Powering it off a nine volt battery located somewhere in the guitar's innards would be much better.

And just to address jackdragbean's original question: first you've got to ask yourself whether you are happy with a single master tone control, or if you prefer different knobs for different pickups? The answer to that will point you the direction you need to be headed.

Cheers - C

Why not simply install an unwired pot and put a tone knob on it?

I'm actualy pretty happy without the additional tone knob. I like a master tone knob. If I'm in the middle of a song and I change pickups, it's a quick twist anyways if I actually change up the tone and to be quite honest, there's a good possibility I was going to tweak the tone in the first place so I don't feel it will hinder anything, plus you can't grab the wrong tone knob if there's only one! :D I really am happy with the way it's wired currently. It may sound odd, but I like the additional space on the pickguard.

and yes, I'd have to add a battery. It would be the way to go if I did that.....but I'm not although I could get a good laugh out of some friends. Think I'll take CAfeathers' suggestion and call for a hole to be left out. I'd much rather someone else do it for me than buy a blank and do all of it myself. It's just not worth the trouble. Thanks. Sometimes you just need to talk it out I guess.
