I have that concert on DVD and you're right it is mindblowing, even better is the "Friday Night In San Francisco" live CD of the trio minus Larry Coryell, Al DiMeola takes his place, and the chops rocket up another level. Get that CD you'll never regret it, incredible is the only word!

As to your question: Jimi Hendrix could not have played with the technique these guys have, no way. John McLaughlin was very much turned on by Jimi's playing, as you can hear him say in many interviews, but it's a different style entirely, Jimi coming from that more blues rock type of thing.

Another tip for you: type Strunz & Farah into your You Tube search box and listen to those guys! they play much the same virtuoso picking style on nylon strings and are right up there with the guitar trio! every bit as good! :D

Thanks! This is exactly the type of reply I was hoping for and why I come to this forum--to learn from those who have been seriously studying guitar music for longer than I. I will check out all of your suggestions. I've been wondering how to find more stuff like this.

Oh yeah i tell you you'll love those guys they are on another planet! Very much like the guitar trio but it's just the two of them with a bit of percussion.

A real mix of exotic different stuff they play, you'll enjoy it.

Hi Skirt and friends.
To my understanding, Friday Night in San Francisco is the most sold guitar record in history.
Actually I know Corryel only by name so I must check him out.
I have many lp´s by Al Dimeola in the seventies, king of the Les Paul jazz-fusion era!
We all know Paco is revered as a true Gurú and ambassador of the Spanish Guitar.
It would appear that his successor has arrived... Check out Vicente Amigo my friends!
Complete meltdown coming our way!
Have a great weekend everyone! :D
Mike.

It won the record of the year in Guitar Player magazine when it came out back in the day and i vividly recall the first time i heard it and being blown away. I had it on the original old vinyl and it's only the last couple of years i managed to get around to getting it on CD.

Larry Coryell was incredible, but i always felt it was not really his scene as much as it was the other two guys. When Al DiMeola replaced him, Al IMO was much more suited to the incredible chops being displayed, as everyone knows his picking technique is unparalleled. 8)
