The Air Ministry classified those sorties as "combat missions".

If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's a duck.

QUACK QUACK!

Sorry... unless you're going Tete A' Tete against the Bad Guys, it ain't Combat... Drones don't maneuver... or Fire back... !!

Sneaking up behind a Pilotless Drone, albeit with an 1800Kg explosive warhead, isn't Combat... it's a Turkey Shoot !!

cheers!

Tell it to the Brits who handed out plenty of RFC's and DSO's to the RAF pilots who flew those "turkey shoots".

One guilty pleasure that I neglected to mention is that I like to prance around the house naked to show tunes from the 30s and 40s.

Interesting-first one is a P-40.

Yep...

It is either a Curtiss P-40B or C Tomahawk or a Curtiss P-40D Kittyhawk , as opposed to the US Curtiss P-40 Warhawk (all variants).

These were given to the British and the Soviet Union as part of the Lend-Lease Act. China, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, France, Brazil, Egypt, Finland and Turkey also acquired and operated the Curtiss P40. Even the Imperial Japanese Army operated 12 captured P-40s in Burma until 1943.

It was used primarily as a ground attack aircraft by the DAF (Desert Air Force) because it lacked the 2-stage supercharger necessary for high-altitude performance. It was renoun for it's ability to absorb combat damage and remain flying.

The P-40 Warhawk was also made famous by the 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG); better known as the "Flying Tigers" of the Chinese Air Force. The Flying Tigers claimed a 297/4 Kill/Loss air-to-air combat record.

The P-40 was one of two aircraft to score air-to-air kills during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and was the aircraft used by the first US pilot to become an Ace in WWII.

In all, just shy of 14,000 aircraft were produced between 1940 and 1944 at the Curtiss plant in Buffalo, NY with the British/Soviets/others receiving approx. 6500 of them.

Interestingly, all the aircraft in the photo are US Made aircraft (Curtiss P-40 -Tomahawk, North American P-51 - Mustang, North American F-86 Sabre Jet, McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) F/A-18 Hornet) except the one on the bottom which is a British-made English Electric Canberra, but which was also produced under license for the US Air Force by Martin Aviation and was known as the B-57 Canberra Bomber.

cheers!

Sorry I should have given details of the pic.

The first aircraft is a Kittyhawk (P40N)

Yes Arjay is correct the bottom aircraft is a F.8 Gloster Meteor.

Also the CA-27 Sabre and the CA-18 Mustang (P51D) seen in this picture were both built in Australia by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation.

The picture show the various generations of aircraft that have served in RAAF 75 Squadron since 1942, a rare event to see these aircraft flying together today.

A guilty pleassure is something you enjoy, but wold be too embarassed to tell anyone else.

I guess my post could fall into your category of "NOT" but to me when I spend what others deem to be WAY TOO MUCH time or money on something you enjoy, then it enters the realm of "Guilty Pleasures".

Mrs. Lightnin MN runs major Golf Tornaments for a living... all the FedEx Cup Tourneys, World Cup Tourneys, The Players, Tour Championship, etc.

Basically, if you see Tiger on TV, my wife is there.

She has also done the past 8 President's Cup Tourneys (and will be doing this year's upcoming President's Cup in Dublin (Columbus) OH). The P-Cup is held in alternate years to the Ryder Cup. In November 2011, it was held in Melbourne Australia at the very posh Royal Sandringham Golf Club.

For the opening ceremonies, we were treated to an amazing show of aerial acrobatics by the RAAF Roulletes precision flying team in their Swiss-made Pilatus PC-9 Jet Trainers (think Turbo Prop P-51 Mustang).

The team was amazing and did an excellent 20 min. performance directly over the audience. The Aussies really did themselves proud at this event !

For me my guilty pleasures are cranking my amp when my wife isn't home (that's how I do the dusting in the man cave 8) ), and the classic Frankenstein and Dracula movies from the 30's. Oh yeah, almost forgot, John Wayne in "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon".
