I just wanted the horrible cover off of it. I was planning on replacing the pickup anyway, so here it is.

It actually does. I did it to one of my old PRSi, and it made it sound slightly more open and also slightly more harsh.

Personally, I like open look and feel. Nice one, Big B. 8)

Quite easy Riley. De-solder the two blobs of solder connecting the cover to the baseplate. Gently pry the cover away. Avoid seesawing the cover as you take it off. You may scrape the coils.

The coils were coated in wax. Should I use a hairdryer to melt it off?

No leave that on. That is what the pickups are potted in to stop them squealing.

Really there should be tape around those coils. Protecting even the wax as well as the wire.

You don't want that wax gone. However if you are planning any pickup surgery then a hair-dryer is a handy tool. Just soften the wax enough to be able the pry the coils away from the baseplate and spacer/magnet.
That way when you want the thing back together you can re-melt the wax back together with the same hair-dryer.

They're coated in tape. Then the wax is all over it.

Right thats ok. The coils were taped then dipped in wax. Rather than the tape being applied after the dip.

Just leave it be. The stuff will come off of it's own accord in time.
