i am trying this new idea of playing MP3s through a guitar amp from my computer on youtube. is this a good idea?

I wouldn't. It might be like playing a bass through a guitar amp, you could hurt it. Just get some cheap computer speakers, or better yet some headphones.

Keep the input volume fairly low like around 4 or below and use the master volume to increase loudness. I have heard of people doing this as a way of breaking in speakers. Playing the stereo for a number of hours using the amp is said to "play in" the speaker while you putter around the house. I haven't done that but I do recall using an amp to play records through in my bedroom as a kid. It didn't sound very good but it was music to listen to while my friends and I hung out. I never wrecked an amp doing it but I also never pumped it up very loud either.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
