Delmark Records has just released a re-mastered and expanded edition of Junior Well's classic blues album 'Hoodoo Man Blues' http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0056NYERG.

Hoodoo Man Blues is considered by most blues aficionados and fans to be one of the best blues albums of all time. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and was chosen by the readers of Living Blues magazine as a top ten Desert Island Blues disc.

Recorded on September 22 & 23, 1965 Hoodoo Man Blues was the first studio album to capture a working Chicago blues band doing essentially what they did on stage without time constraints to accommodate the singles market.

It was on this album that Buddy Guy was recorded playing through the Leslie speaker. Actually, this was by accident Buddy once told me. His Bassman amp was shorting out, and the recording engineer, so not to waste session time, wired Buddy up to the Leslie, and the rest is guitar history.

I already had 'Hoodoo Man Blues' on vinyl, one in mono and the stereo release, plus the original CD release, what's makes this release different is the re-master, addition outtakes and pictures from the original session. BTW, it sounds great!

Here's a bit of music trivia, on the original mono vinyl liner notes, it lists 'The Friendly Chap' as the guitarist, this was because Chess Records, although allowed Buddy to play the session, wouldn't allow his name to be listed in the liner notes.

What was the deal with the Chess brothers and Buddy Guy? There are dozens of stories that describe them as (seemingly) trying to destroy his career. They wouldn't allow him any leeway as an artist...he could have been such a crossover hit for them (appeal to young white listeners), much like Chuck Berry.

I wonder what they were afraid of.

No, they allowed him leeway, but they didn't want him to turn his amp up to '11'.

Anyone that has ever met Buddy knows that he's really humble, & is actually very shy...that is until he gets onstage.

In the early days, he would turn his amp up to get attention & he wanted to do this in the studio, but the Chess Brothers thought that was too much rock and rollest and wouldn't record him with his amp that loud.
