The dropped D tuning is merely another "arrow in the quiver" to accomplish a specific task, much the same as having several different types and brands of guitar, amp, or stompbox.

Hey, that's just me. To me I feel like the string could snap off really easily. I just don't want to be ready to dodge flying strings while playing. Although, once a string snapped on me and I kept pulling it and loosening the tension and it made some cool noises. Definitely worth trying if you're bored.

You won't suffer that if you have a guitar specfically set up and intonated for that tuning or any others, for that matter. Understood that such can be a tall order on a tight budget. One of the reasons that the modeling guitars are interesting toys.

You can avoid that if you have heavier strings.

I can honestly say that I've not broken a string in the last three years. My strings always last for at least 4 months on a guitar before I change them... you'll be fine! Don't be a pansy. :P

I don't like heavy strings either.

I usually make my strings last 2-3 months or until they rust.

Try some GHS Fast Fret if you want them to last longer... cleans the crap off and slows down the rusting cycle.

I mean, 2-3 months is kinda good for light strings. I only use 9/42s.

They're just that balance of light enough. I find them more comfortable.

I broke my left hand in 5 or 6 separate places and now I can only use 2 of my fingers to play with.
