After almost 10 yrs and well over 200,000 kms our '02 Nissan Sentra is wasting away in a garage refusing to start. The car will start but only when it wants to and no computer programs or tests will diagnose it.All is not lost though as I take this as a sign to go and buy the nice '07 GMC Canyon Ext. Cab 4X4 that I have seen advertised at a very tempting price and with very low mileage.
Things are gradually giving out in the car every couple of months,,starting with the starting motor,Then the AC,then various suspension bits and now this puzzling refusal to start.
I think that when a vehicle gets to a certain age it's futile to keep putting money into it and much cheaper in the long run to cut your losses and buy a more reliable vehicle.I'm kind of relieved really as I dreaded the thoughts of the Missus commuting back and forth to work in another one of our snotty winters plus I need a truck for lugging around my gardening supplies and my tractor and lawnmowers etc. if they need servicing.

I have never had good luck with used cars it seems you always end up with someone else's headache. I made a choice years ago to go for a new model every 7 to 10 years and the second it starts to demonstrate symptoms of being at the end of its dependable life it's promptly traded in. I don't buy cars to work on I buy them to drive  8)

I have an 86 944 turbo that is having the same problem :/ I have done everything but swap the engine  I think with some cars multiple things just crap out all at the same time. you could do what i am doing and slowly rebuild it if you are attached to it  parts for it are probably cheaper than Porsche parts

Well there you go, my American made '97 Mercury sable, bought used, is running like the well oiled machine it is. Did a 9 hour, each way, trip in the spring to NYC and not a hickup. Just had a dealer inspection last week and all they found was a tie rod showing some wear and the hood shocks don't hold the hood up any more. Was kinda looking forward to a replacement but I guess not just yet. Maybe a new guitar or new amp instead, and keep the car a couple more years.

Good luck with the GMC, big change from a nissan.

^^The difference is that once you've finished a refurbishing/rebuild you'll have and exciting classic to drive where I'd still have a boring humdrum point A to Point B econobox.I've been wanting to get another truck since before we got this car and now I finally have the missus talked into the practicality of a truck.I told her that it would save a lot on the wear and tear on the upholstery from lugging gear around too which really seemed to be a selling point on the truck.

Get the truck. My first car is going to be a truck. A 1994 Ford Ranger with 280,000 miles (last I knew). Pretty much everything has been replaced on it.

Hell, if I get this 2nd job, I'll buy this 72 Mustang that's been up for sale for about a month.

i'm still driving my 95 ford ranger. the odometer quit working 5 years ago at 150,000 miles. i just do the basic care on "sclepp". for years i've been saying i'll get a new truck when schlepp decides he's done. well, he ain't done yet. my wife is ready for her new ride which happens about every 3-4 years. we've decided i'll take her toyota tundra and she can get something new. i'm excited and sad. as stupid as it may sound, i love that ford ranger like an old friend. damn, i just shed a tear typing that last sentence.

I love that show! And here is my latest "Used Car"...

Image

A very nice 2005 fully loaded Lemans Blue Corvette, with just 10K miles and not a scratch...even on the undercarriage...never even saw rain! And it likes sharing garage space with my "Other" used car :!: :!: :!:

Not to be picky, but what happened to buy American? A Kia and a Porsche?

Detroit couldn't pay me to drive one of their UAW-built POS's.

But my three Japanese-branded vehicles were all built in the USA so it's not my belief that Americans cannot build great cars and trucks.

It's not a fixer upper if it's fully restored.
