Armadillo, I'm hopefully getting a job as a mechanic when I turn 18. I'll probably be able to support myself well. I don't plan on buying a new car until I know I can pay cash (my boss might sell me his Mustang, hehe). I pay cash or do work for everything I own currently. Do you think I'm on the right track?

It doesn't matter if you're making 20,000 a year or 20,000,000 a year--if you spend more than you make, you'll eventually go bankrupt.

It sounds like you're going down the right path--paying cash or paying as you go along.

However, it is a necessary evil in this world that requires each of us to have a credit rating and requires us to establish some credit. He best way to do that is to buy something small on credit--my first credit purchase was a home stereo system when was 19. It drove me nuts that I had to pay interest on something I could gave just as easily paid cash for, but I did this to establish credit. I later bought a car and paid it out, too...but by doing so, I was established and able to buy a house at age 21.5.

Pay cash as much as possible, but we have to establish credit, because most of us would never be able to pay cash for a home or for certain things like that.

Reminds me of what happened to my great grandpa earlier this year. He bought a brand new Lincoln because he wants to enjoy life more and look good doing it. They rejected his insurance because he always paid cashed for everything. So, he payed off 90% of it in cash and is making payments to get credit.

But I don't want to end up like most of my family, so I'm going to try to get this job. My mom said it was good pay for being right out of highschool and would be great so I could save for a house eventually. I don't have high expectations like she does, but at least I'll have a hands on job. (I would never be able to sit still, like in an office or any building) As for the over spending, I'll just be sure to watch everything carefully. I've always been all over my money whenever I have it. I usually give a thought process before I buy something, unless it's food.

I cant say anything about other states that border our friends to the north. In western Washington/British Columbia, we share a common border crossing known as "THE PEACE ARCH". Every weekend the crossing is cluttered with Bus Loads of Canadians comeing down with one purpose in mind. That is to Buy American/Chinese. They take literally Tones of Foreign made merchandise back across the border. (Duty Free). When I go to Canada to enjoy the weekend and make a fue purchases, I pay through the nose in import TAX when I return home. Something is wrong with that picture. I should be given the same tax break at the border that Canadians are getting. The foreign manufacturers are getting there fair share. The retailers are getting there fair share. The transportation companies are getting there fair share. The government is certainly getting there fair share The Canadian Shoppers are getting there's and I am taking it in the SHOARTS. What Gives America. I want some to, DAMN IT.

The Canadian's pay their import duties to the Canadian government. Same as I pay mine to the UK and you pay yours to the US Danny.
Sometimes you can get round em and if the Canadians have found a way that works for them, then good on em. It's not like they'd be giving the money to your government anyway.

We're not getting any tax break here. We shop in the US simply because things are cheaper, even with exchange rate differential. Things are cheaper probably because of economy of scale in the US and more competition at the retail level.

Under NAFTA any goods made in US, Canada and Mexico can cross borders duty free. Stuff outside of here attracts duty. We don't always get stopped coming back from the US, so you can catch a break from time to time, just don't get caught lying.

You might be paying sales tax not duty, or if you're paying duty maybe you shouldn't be. Don't buy booze or gas here, but you know that already.

Things are just less expensive in the US, ask our UK and Australian friends.

Fender guitars in the U.S. cost about 70% of what we pay in Europe. And since U.S. dealers are quite happy to make some extra dollars, we get good rates when shipping is across the pond. I ordered my CS from an US shop, would have cost 1200 USD more in Germany.

Cheers

David
