I'm probably going there in the spring for a field trip, so I want to save some money to maybe take a beautiful guitar home. So, I want to know if there's any good music stores in NYC. The area we'll be in is near Wall St. (it's for a business class)

Near Wall St, you'd go up a little bit to City Hall where J&R Music World is. They, however are a chain store, dealing in new instruments where they adhere strictly to the M.A.P. structure and do not give 'deals', per se. They have (and don't have) all the same stuff most better on line stores do. The closest to independently owned stores with new, used and vintage stuff would be in and around Greenwich Village which isn't exactly 'around the corner'. As to who are the best in The Village, its all about timing in terms of your being there, what you want, how much you want to pay for it, what they have in stock, how eager they are to get rid of it and of course, how well you can 'negotiate'.

I'd actually like to visit Greenwich Village. Pretty historic area, as far as 60s music goes. I could ask my business teacher if she could schedule a detour at the end of the day.

Rudy's Music Stop has a new location on Broome Street off Broadway. Rudy's is very high end. Matt Umanov has been on Bleeker Street west off 6th Avenue for years. There's Carmine Street Guitars near him as well. There's a Guitar Center on 14th St but IMHO, it store is a dog. When the time comes, you can PM me and I'll see what I can put together for you list wise. You should give me an idea of what you are seeking here and your price ranges. Meanwhile, Google these establishments. Rudy's is also located on 48th Street in midtown.

As far as the Village is concerned, there's remains the Cafe WHA where I gigged with my trio for 18 months back in the mid 1960's. I can show you where the old Night Owl storefront used to be where the Lov'in Spoonful first played, the church which inspired the lyric in California Dreaming...Chelsea Guitars on 23 St....and more.

Anyway....when the time comes, I'll put my head together with Martian's and we'll see what we can recommend based upon what you are looking for.

Doc.

It has to be really close to Wall Street. That's what we're going there for, but afterwards, we have some time to goof off.

Check out Ludlow Guitars on Ludlow Street in the Lower East Side... not too far from Wall Street. While you are at Wall Street you can also check out the O
ccupy Wall Street protests!

Really close in Manhattan can be a matter of a quick subway ride too. It depends on your time line. If you're talking about walking distance and a limited amount of leisure time, Ludlow Guitars and Rudy's Soho might be your option. Exact locations are something you can research on Google maps and if you need further assistance let us know.

I was talking about walking distance. I'll be sure to check these out if possible.

It's a one day trip. We're taking a bus at like 5:00am and hopefully getting there around 9:00 or 10:00 and then we go to the stock exchange and we get a full tour and see how things work. We get to talk with a few professionals and then we get lunch. All of that should take a few hours. Then we have goof off time for a few hours. Then we go home.

As I see it, the best you're going to be able to do in the time allotted is J&R Musicworld which will be about a 10 block walk north on Broadway to Park Row and then over east to #41. Don't know of anything else of note in the immediate area. The others mentioned are further north. Figure 20-30 minutes to walk one-way plus the time shopping. Before DST sets in, you're going to be getting into evening at that time as well. Check out their website in advance. A serious music shopping tour of NYC really requires at least two days.

There's nothing I can add to this.

If Martian says so, then it's truly the last word. Keep us posted.
