Does your favorite artist influence the choice of your guitar ?? seem like a metal player should go ESP , Schecter etc.. more blues/jazz would go stratocaster .

my other question is : how much % of the sound is influence by the choice of the guitar .

I.e im playing metal .. many would say to go ESP and not stratocaster . My strat is HSS with duncan sh-6 (distortion ) .

Now i was looking at the Jeff hanneman signature model from ESP .

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/ ... 8000001000

the guitar wood is Alder ( like my strat " and maple neck ) the pickup are EMG but example: if i were to buy a strat and put the same pickups on it .. would there be much difference soundwise ???

ok out of the box .. the single coil strat might not be a "metal" axe .. but if you switch pickup on a HSS .. i cant understand why people would say to go ESP over stratocaster for playing guitar . "strat arent built for metal" ..

whats the difference a Alder ESP and a Alder strat soundwise ??

would the same humbucker sound similar on a alder body than mahogany ? .. on heavy distortion , could someone tell the difference ? . how much is the wood responsible in the overall sound of the guitar .

i dont know if my next guitar should be esp or continued with stratocaster :)

a lot of "metal axe like jackson , esp , dean had Seymour duncan sh-4 ( jeff beck ) pickup .. which imo isnt a metal pickup but more all around .

same as we dont see a lot of rock /jazz /blues players using jackson , esp , dean etc..

seem like guitar has been "stereotype " by the artists that companies endorsed .

:(

dilemma

Hi there Sky!

Sounds like you want to break free from stereotypes and be yourself.
Time to celebrate! :D

Check out Malcom Young. I admire him and his guitar of choice!

How about Mike Stern! Contemporary Jazz on a Telecaster!

I admire Pat Metheny, for example. But I wouldn´t purchase a guitar like he uses.
I am slowly moving into playing jazz guitar, but I´m so much in LOVE with single coils, I would never ever switch to humbuckers to follow the norm!
Time to make a stand!

Some students I have, they belong to the Steve Vai era and cannot concieve of anything other than an Ibanez.
We are all cult followers in our own way.
I am strictly a Stratocaster guy because I love the sound and feel SO MUCH and anything else just seems like a waste of time. So I am just as stubborn and narrow-minded as they are.
Go for the look, go for the sound, go for both if possible! Check out a PRS for example.
So many options! A happy camper´s dream. :D

When I see Jimmy Page, I want Telecaster. When I see Pete Townshend, I want SG. When I see David Gilmour, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and many others I want Strat. Then I wake up and say to myself: "I don't want to be like (sound like) Jimmy Page, Townshend, ....". Of course I'm influenced by lot of guitarists, but I want to express myself and my feelings.

everyone is influenced by their favorite artists when starting out. but you kinda start to move away from it and that's when the Tone Disease kicks in  if the guitar sounds how you want it to sound and feels how you want it to feel. who cares about stereotypes  eventyally you will do like most of us here and have a bunch of different guitars and it wont be an issue

The way I see it, in general, the reason Metal players go for ESP, Schecter, Ibanez etc.. Is because metal requires a lot of shredding and most metal players want 24-fret guitars for that. Fender doesn't offer too many of those. Also the guitars equipped with high output humbuckers are the choice of metal players for a quick pick attack response and high treble output.

Secondly, there's also a thing called "looking the part". A Jazz player using a Dean Dime Razorback would tend to look a little silly if you ask me. However, you COULD modify one of those to sound Jazzy if you really wanted to.

I'm in a Reggae band and I use my Schecter Tempest Custom with EMG actives a lot. I bought it from a guy who used it for Metal. It's all about whether you're comfortable with the guitar and how it sounds and looks (to you).

I'm a big fan of Steve Vai and Korn and I'd have to say that it did play a role in me buying a couple of Ibanez guitars when I was playing heavy metal music. After joining this band, my focus shifted more toward short-scale guitars with double humbuckers. I feel more comfortable playing and singing with them for Reggae. No influences for that really. Just focusing on myself and what I want for what I do.

I might be tempted to try out a new/different guitar based on an artist I admire using it, but I've never said, "Hey, I'm gonna get me a _______ because _______ uses one!"

Anyway, I could have any player's (Clapton, SRV, Jimmie Vaughan, whoever) personal stage rig, and I'm still going to sound like me, so it would be a waste of money for me to try to copy my hero's rig...
