On many occasions I have been jamming a riff and rally getting into it, but then it starts to sound familiar. Then its like "dammit, thats blah blah bblah song!" I have many unfinished songs, riffs etc. If I only had the time to go through them and finish them up. Sometimes take a break from a song thats giving you trouble and listen to what you have later. You might find you need something or want to leave something alone. I once laid down a lead track and as soon as I was done I hated it and was going to delete it. I got sidetracked and never deleted it. Turns out I really liked it after checking it out later!
