Two 4x12 cabs. Usually one atop the other
ala

The stuff of dreams which will have a tendency to take your head off with the sound from that top cab. Most players use the bottom cab only, leaving the top one there for aesthetic value only.

Rather than

a lot more physiotherapist friendly.

Basically, in order to make your amp a full stack you would just need to hook up another 4x12 cab stacked on top of the one you already have. And yes, it would be louder, you have four more speakers to move air with. To be honest, you should never need that much volume for anything short of a stadium gig or large venue. >_>

Really if your playing a stadium then the PA should be good enough for you to not need a full stack, so its mostly just aesthetic nowadays.

Yep, exactly. I can't think of any situation where you'd need more than a 50 watt 2x12 combo. The stack rose to power in a time when the PA was for vocals and drums and every other band was a power trio. Imagine being a bassist cramped onto a small stage, with your cab down low (where it should be). Pushed right up between the guitar amps and drums because the keyboard and brass was dominating the left side of the stage. And the guitarist blowing through a 100watt TSL stack.

You'd be a bit miffed to say the least.

Yes I love stacks. They are wholly impractical though.

+1

The amp stack is a symbolic phallic surrogate for "short-statured" guitarists.

these days i carry around a small amp for gigs- must be getting lazy in my old age

i still have great memories of concerts from the 60's and 70's. i would get together with friens and get there as soon as the doors opened. most concerts were festival seating, so we would get as close to the frint as we could to check out the equipment.

i still get a thrill when i think of those marshall stacks, and i love to see the doors concert videos with their acoustic amp setup. i still have a jones for those amps

A full stack for anything outside of a stadium or outdoor venue is overkill.I have both full stack and half stack set ups and quite frankly prefer the sound of the half stack. In order to run a full stack you have to be careful with matching the ohmage of the cabinets.Mismatched cabinets can mean a disasterous meltdown in your amp and prove quite costly.Running 2-8 OHM cabinets through a Marshall head would mean setting the ohmage on the amp to 4 OHMS to handle the load,to not do so would probably cost you a transformer or at the very least a couple of fried tubes.
A 50 W Stack may move a lot of air but not as much as a 130 W combo fully dimed. So you have to keep your Wattage values in mind too.If I had my druthers now I'd go with a 100W combo if I wanted loud and add a 2X12 cab if I wanted to move more air or simply use a head with a 2X12 Cab.A full stack may look super Macho but believe me you won't look super macho after years of lugging 2X100 lb. cabs and a 60 lb. head up several staircases and up on the stage in venue after venue.

I used to carry around a Fender full-stack back when I was younger, especially for the outdoor flatbed trailer gigs. My drummer and bass player were "short-statured" and I didn't want then playing with the head controls.

Truth be told, it did look really awesome, but I usually only hooked up the upper 4-12 - eight speakers, even for a younger me, was most often too much for indoor gigs.
