I'm aware that this is the Fender Forum, but I wanted to ask a Les Paul question here because the level of expertise is unrivaled.
"Really" from Super Session, is one of my all time favorite recordings. I listen to it 2 or 3 times a week. I hear parts of it that don't sound like a typical LP yet I've never seen a picture of Bloomfield with anything but. Do you think the LP he used on that recording maybe had P90's or am I hearing processing done by the engineer? Anyone know any other details of the gear he used to get such perfect intonation and clarity, other than a set of hands like no other human was given.

does Steven Stills have guitar as part of his album listing?

I'm not sure but Stills doesn't play on "Really".

it has been awhile, as a card carrying geezer I call forgetfulness. It was cool to see the album mentioned. Blood Sweat and Tears, CSN, Electric Flag?

No problem. I use the geezer and poor memory cards quite often. I have no choice.
Another gold nugget album was Cold Blood. But I don't want to get off track because someday I want to play like Mike Bloomfield.

That'll probably happen about the same time I can dunk a basketball. :D

Ah, Mike Bloomfield. He was my first guitar hero. He had my favorite Gibson tone ever and incredible technique. His solo on East West still blows me away.

Your question about what guitar Mike played on Really led me to this site.

http://www.mikebloomfieldamericanmusic. ... uitars.htm

From the gear chronology listed there it was probably Mike's 1959 Les Paul Standard that was used on Super Session. That was one Gibson Custom Shop reissue I would love to own but not at the 5 to 7K price.

Oh, and to swing the topic back to Fender, Bloomfield played Telecasters, too. His early cuts with John Hammond Sr. and his backing of Dylan when he went electric were with Teles. :)

I love these threads which remind me that I'm 69 years old and used to own the original vinyl myself, now lost in the foggy, foggy, foggy.........well......on the point I'm glad you raised....All kinds of gear can be hauled into a session and there's no way of knowing what he might have called on for the track you speak of. Including the gear used for the session or a particular track is something new in liner notes and, to the best of my aging memory, not done back then.

Got to see Bloomy with Paul Butterfield. On one occasion I saw him use
a DuoSonic and the Goldtop.

At another show he sometimes played this Strat :

Cool picture Mike, funny he would wear his own shirt.
Thanks for that link John, that gave me a lot more insight into the guy.

At what point in an artist's career does one begin to record for posterity a gearology crossed referenced to work product. :?: :!:  Being a contemporary of both Miami Mikes and mine by virtue of age, this seems nothing short of amazing in that Bloomfield passed away at such a young age.

+1

We've lost too many great players at too young an age......Danny Gatton, Steve Gaines, Buddy, Jimi, SRV, Jaco, The Ox. The list goes ever on (to the detriment of the music-loving public).

Another of my fave all time LPs (long-players for the youngsters). As I recall the pictures of Mike that graced the back cover had him playing a Les Paul with what appeared to be PAF's. HTH

I can relate, Doc. I hit 62 in a couple of weeks. I hope I hit it before it hits me.

MIke Bloomfield's gear is easier to trace than most of my guitar heroes since he didn't seem to be a crazy collector. He also used very few effects. It was pretty much a Les Paul with P90s or PAF humbuckers into a classic tube amp with a dash of reverb on the tracks I most associate with Mike. His fingers provided the magic.

Man, all these memories from all these concerts in my youth where at the same time, they are all so hazy.
