Okay, it's true I have a bit of trouble with buying guitars - these days, as I approach old age,I can rarely go two or maybe three months, without losing control - it's a mental issue, I think; but it's also due in large part to my duo partner who spends a lot of time hitting places that sell used guitars. He buys them, fixes them up, then wants to sell them to me. He doesn't waste his time with junk and he always seems to stumble onto lost and abused gems.

I have a special place in my heart for Teles, my first real guitar was a 1971 Tele Custom. Today I got a special email from my good buddies at MF introducing the new Fender Modern Player Tele Plus (and several others).

This is the first one that I felt very interested in buying, though I am wondering what that guitar would look like with a rosewood neck on it...

And I'm such a sucker for oddball Fenders that I am also thinking seriously of this one. I know my son would go crazy for the Lake Placid Blue and the Triple-Bucker when I die.

The guitars are supposed to start shipping next week, though I won't hold my breath. I checked my MF credit card and the balance is under $100, so I went ahead and pre-ordered the Tele. Naturally, for the sake of safety, I will have it shipped to me at work...

Truth be told, I was about to take the plunge on the Candy Apple w/ RW Blacktop Tele, but this one overcame me. And it's $100 less than the Blacktop! They both are.

The best price I would have been able to get on a Blacktop would have been about $425. Tonight I had a $50 off Coupon Code that was supposed to be good on any purchase over $349 (MF price on this new line is $399), but in spite of my efforts to use it, it was declined. Probably because these guitars are so new or maybe the fact that it was a pre-order. Oh, well. Fender frequently opts out of discount sales, along with umpteen other brands.

Why would you even want to look at a Chinese-made guitar after owning a '71 Tele Custom?

The charcoal color looks good in the picture, but the JA90 Tele I bought came in transparent black which I thought looked good till I saw it in person, and I ended up getting a natural finish. My tele was made in Indonesia and has excellent build quality so I think you'll be happy with it.

Well, let's see...

I've got Teles made in the USA...

I've got Teles made in Japan...

I've got Teles made in Mexico...

I've got Teles made in Korea...

I've got Teles made in Indonesia... I think.

So my buying habits should be influenced by someone who has a disdain for "imported guitars..?" I don't think so. From what I have read, including many posts on this Forum, there's not much wrong with guitars made in China - anything we can do, they can do... for less. You might as well start reaming Fender for having the audacity to have some of their guitars built in China.

I also have a hard and fast rule about guitars I use when I'm performing live. I never take a guitar to a bar that I can't replace for $500 or less. I like the looks of this guitar. I like the features of this guitar. I like the color of this guitar. No, it's not a '71 Tele Custom, but I think it will make a nice addition to the Tele collection.

I like the way the Honeyburst Tele looks. Can't wait to see one in person to try it out and compare them to other Teles in the store.

I never gig with a guitar in a bar that can't bust at least four or five heads before having to retune....a Strat is perfect for that.

I let only my ears and hands decide whether or not I buy a guitar,I couldn't care less if it was made in a tent in the Khergiz Steppes,as long as it played and sounded to my liking. I wouldn't however buy a guitar where the profits went to funding some political dictatorship but I don't know of and instances of this.

I can understand gasin' for a Japanese Fender.

Poor wong, just can't let it go, can you? Weren't you the guy in the Squier Forum giving some guy grief for bashing Squier guitars? I think you said something like, "I guess you've never tried a CV Strat." And let's see, that guitar is made where? Oh, yeah, it's a Chi-Com "imported guitar."

I'm glad you can "understand gasin' for a Japanese Fender." I've got Japanese Fenders - three of 'em, 90s vintage - two Teles and a Strat. I don't want another standard Tele, wherever it's made. I want a Tele that's different! This Tele, though it is an "import," just like MIM, MIJ or whatever, is freakin' different! I like a bridge humbucker - I like neck humbuckers, I suppose one day I'll break down and buy a Pawnshop Guitar, but not right now.

And you other guys are getting a little political, aren't you? "Chi-Com Fender?" It's a FENDER! Frankly, I'm nervous about buying any more of those guitars made in Mexico. Why, for all we know, sales of those guitars are helping out the drug cartels! They might be turning profits from those guitars into guns sold in the USA and shipped across the border, then used to kill US citizens - oh, my. :x And those guitars made in Japan - for all we know, they might very well be radioactive! :?

I'm guitar obsessed! I grew up dirt poor. I'm not rich now, but I can do a little magic on a fairly regular basis - turning gig money into new guitars. A couple more guitars and I'll hit 60! Oh, yeah! Social Security and guitars coming out of my... ears. :D

I live in Ireland, so they're all imported as far as I'm concerned.
