YouTube has a ton of guitar lessons, and I've learned a ton on the 'tube. Just search guitar lessons and you'll find all kinds of lessons.

Start out learning some chords...learn which chords go together...and work on playing those chords together on time. It's a long process sometimes at first, but it'll all start coming together the more you practice. Also you might look into picking up a beginning guitar book. You can get one for just over ten bucks at most music shops.

Learn to tune by ear too. It saves me tons of time with re stringing and tuning.

start with the basic chords and learn to read TAB. tis all i did, i'm pretty much self taught. if your looking at becoming a 'correct' guitar player (meaning using all sorts of mumbo jumbo scales, knowing what every chord you play is etc) then i'd reccomend saving some money for a teacher when you've learn't all the basic chords.

Hi Hendrixfan!

I think you are on the right track when you mention timing before chords.

A good thing to do is to take the un-plugged guitar and accompany your favorite music.
Pretend you know what you are doing.
Use headphones to dive into the tune.
Feel the rythm as a bodily experience.
Begin to model your unruly right hand, let the rythmic pulse take charge.

Once rythm and groove are felt as an interior, bodily generated pulse, then it´s a matter of hitting the right notes. I am lazy, so my scale knowledge reflects that and I hit many wrong notes before beginning to sound ok on a given progression. Try this, when you play a note that sounds just wrong, slide up or down one fret! Ha! :D

I agree with the basics. Chords, picking and scales. A combos of YouTube and books should help along the way.
