It was like they saw a Fender Telecaster Custom (like the current '72 Telecaster Custom being offered) and said, "Let's put those electronics on a weird Paul-inspired body, try our hand at bolt-on necks and make some bucks..."

I know there was a (later) three-pickup version made by Gibbo as well...
