Kurt Cobain was a sick man but remarkable songwriter with a clear vision for how those songs should be performed and recorded. His band broke through the existing clutter of the radio and help change the direction of pop music. It's not an exaggeration to say that Nevermind defined its time just as Sgt. Pepper defined its time (neither of them caused the social change, BTW, they just reflected it).

To deny the power of records like "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Lithium," and "Heart-Shaped Box" is to admit that you don't really understand rock music at all.

And no, Nirvana was not the greatest band of all time, but starting a thread like this is the musical equivalent of shouting, "get offa my lawn!"

I'm actually looking forward to being the old guy on the porch telling kids to get offa my lawn!.

Yeah, lord knows I heard it enough when I was a kid. Looking back, the old fart was usually right.

You said: I guess you gotta have something to look forward to, ay?...in reference to the old man yelling at kids to get off his lawn.

I replied: Yeah, lord knows I heard it enough when I was a kid. Looking back, the old fart was usually right

It's actually funny how far this thread has gone from it's original intent. It started as a debate over Kobain's guitar playing skills. Not his songwriting skills, which were superior. I think there's been very few in rock to be able to put words to the angst of scared and hopeless youth.

Cobain and Nirvanna caught my ear the first time I heard them. Whether Cobain was a great guitar soloist/player or not, he played what worked for the peice. Virtuoso? - probably doesn't fit in that category. BUT, as has been pointed out, Nirvanna sold more than all of us combined with his alleged inept style. Remember, what you don't play is as important to what you do play.

I'm not waiting, I tell kids to get off my lawn all the time :D (More specifically, " Hey Guy's, play Basket Ball in your own driveway!")

Grunge is out of season, approximately 10 years out of season. Whether or not someone personally likes an artist's music is a subjective argument. To state that it's currently a popular trend to dislike Nirvana...

There actually might be some objectivity behind that statement.

As for the skills of Mr. Cobain, was that the point? Was it a bad thing that someone was writing and playing songs that just about anyone could play?

Who knows?

I would suspect that punk rock is not a favorite for many these days either, and I have a suspicion that people's likes and dislikes are strongly influenced by popular trends, ie "this person dislikes Nrvana because he was subjected to mutliple negative opinions on the topic."
