I'm really trying hard to condemn this guy.. but..

I know, same feeling here.

Disrespectful, yes, and stealing is wrong of course. I can understand loving a guitar enough to be buried with it, but you can't take it with you. I'd rather see any guitar go to someone who'll care for it than to get put six feet under. Tragic story on so many levels.

I believe in wider ownership of musical instruments, although grave robbing is probably beyond the pale - not to mention macabre.. I won't talk about the thief, we've done that already.

Half the problem, was the attitude of the deceased owner. The "it was mine and I'm taking it with me" approach is hardly altruistic is it? I'd go further and say it was actually down right selfish. The legality of it is purely secondary as far as I'm concerned.

Some of the finest musicians in the world never truly owned their instruments. The "Brown" cello, and "The Davidoff" cello, were 'provided' for Jacqueline Du Pre, because she had need of them and because her stellar level of talent demanded such a gift. Without a little philanthropy, many players may never even get started. If I knew I wasn't going to be around to use them, my instruments would go to the appropriate needy organisations so that they can continue to have a life outside of mine. A good guitar remains a good guitar even if the driver has snuffed it.. If we walked past a group of people who were setting alight to a perfectly good instrument in the street, then we might ask them why, and certainly believe them to be a bunch of a***holes.

As for this, "oh but he really loved it" malarkey, well a wise man once said that if you truly love something, then you should be prepared to give it up. I believe that most strongly.

Even though it is downright ghoulish you can almost see the point of the guitar/grave robber-that's IF he is a true guitar lover and truly hates the thought of it becoming worm fodder.People have been buried in more lavish fashion, seated in their favourite car in their finest clothes as one wealthy lady in her beloved white El Dorado and one well heeled man in a Ferrari GTO.

Maybe the late lamented dreaded the thoughts of some poseur in the future taking his beloved ax and slapping in a set of super duper distortion pups and a floating trem. Fearing that he decided to take it past the Pearly Gates with him.

Quite the conundrum...and some very interesting comments. Once upon a time I thought I'd like to be buried with my guitar( like Duane Allman) ...that guitar eventually got traded and the next one and the ones that got stolen. Then I decided I didn't want to be buried at all and as for my guitars they'll be willed away to those who love them or need them. BUT disrespecting a man's last wishes, violating his notions of how he would like to go out of this world......uh-uh..just doesn't sit right with me even if I don't agree with his decision, it was his right and should be respected as such. :?

Couldn't have said it better, it was his guitar and his decision that should be honored.

The way one judges another is the way he judges himself.

Meaning? I judge the thief to be a scumbag since I believe that stealing, compounded with dishonoring a man's dying wish, is wrong.

Or am I misunderstanding your post. Are you saying that we/I judge the thief to harshly?

I don't think so. What person in his right mind would steal from a freaking coffin? :?
It's basically perverted. I bet the guy has some issues......

The guy who took it is a creep. If he can't respect a persons grave what will he respect?

This article was in the local paper. http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/ ... 25018.html

Greg Koch has a great quote at the end. "The Telecaster is my main weapon, primarily because it's so sturdy," he said. "The Telecaster is one of those guitars that could survive the trek through purgatory and stay in tune the entire time."
