+1 for the right tube amp cranked. Take the `57 Deluxe Re-Issue for example. Very pricy little amp with next to no features but it can really sing all by itself. For some people there`s just no substitute for a Tweed Deluxe.

I like single channel amps. Right now it's my Egnater Rebel 20. It's got some bells and whistles but nothing is foot switchable. I just like simple old school tones and the Rebel does everything I want and then some. All I require is simple and reliable.

If it gets much better than that Reb, somebody will damn sure have to show us how!

My current setup is a Tele into a BOSS SD-1 super overdrive, into a Jet City 20W combo. I like to crank the master, and have the preamp at ~5. I use the volume knob on the guitar to affect the gain level for any rhythm parts and the SD-1 for a slightly dirty boost for solos and other lead parts. Too much to mess with on an amp is distracting (to me) and I end up playing with the amp more than I play the guitar if I have too many knobs available.

I have been playing for over 20 years. I have had a lot of different amps over the years. Last year I was looking for a new amp. I played several different types and for me the Fender Mustang V just blew me away. I have owned one for several months and I can get a lot of different sounds out of it. I can even play with my pedals if I want. In my opinion it is very versatile. This amp is an all frills sound monster. Not to mention it does not cost an arm and a leg.

Tube vs Solid State is just a personal preference, I recommend playing around with various amps to see which is yours. An amp with all the bells and whistles is another choice as well. All I can say is I am happy with my set up.

Yes, I would say that effects have come a long-long way since Hendrix, and these days they can be very good to great.

I have recently been going to the school of minimalism.

I have a SS-22 Call it three channel with overdrive all tube amp.

Channel one is a good clean and fat, Channel two -- high gain

I use the guitar/echo/Amp w/ reverb. That's it all she wrote. Btw - just added the echo to mess with it.

I have a pedal board with all the normal stuff: Comp/OCD/Blues Drive/Memory Man/chorus/Holy Stain/Wah Pedal. It sits under my bed mostly now.

I usually go all technical/complicated with everything then back off and end up with what I should have in the beginning. Brain - Hands - Guitar - Amp.

I'm close to buying a new amp. I intended to get a tube amp like a Blues Jr. or Vox AC15C1. I'm now leaning towards a hybrid tube /solid state modeling amp like the Vox Valvetronix VT40. Kind of complex, but I figure I can eliminate messing with pedals and once you create your own presets, you just bring them up and reuse them. I've been playing clean the past year and I like it, but I'd also like some subtle not over the top effects for a change.
I'm also considering Vox's new super amp:

I prefer a good tube amp with my own choice of pedals. I have been impressed with several of the digital amps with built in modeling and effects, but often they come up short in comparison to my rig...perhaps because I like/love each piece of my signal chain and chose it based on it's own merits, rather than just using it because "it's there".

I use a brownface/brown tolex '63 reissue Vibroverb (2x10 combo). I could use this amp alone, but it's a bit too clean until it gets to "Exploding Heads" volume, so I must use an overdrive to get it to the sound I want.
I set up the NORMAL channel for harp (12AU7 preamp tube) and the BRIGHT channel for guitar (12AX7 preamp).

I've documented my (slightly too cluttered) pedalboard before, but it was borne of my days as a "fill in the blanks"/second fiddle guitarist. I was required to play the parts of the (cover) songs the other guitarist wasn't playing, or sometimes simulate keyboard parts on guitar (Phase 90 and Leslie simulators are great for that). Thus, I ended up with an overdrive and a fuzz and a wah and a distortion and a...in order to adequately cop the original recording's vibe.

When I went to form my own band, some of the pedals changed, but I kept most of them so I could create my own atmosphere or textures for my (mostly original) set list. It works for me.

I pride myself on having a unique-but-familiar yet totally organic tone, especially considering what resides at my feet. My tone never sounds processed, and the effects don't overpower the song (rather, they complement the vibe of the recording or performance). The fact that there's rarely more than one or two pedals turned on probably contributes to that.

Having said that, I often use my pedalboard and a Line 6 POD for DI recording; it makes it easier to get a good guitar and drum track down simultaneously (less bleedthrough if either Drummer or I make an unignorable error). He and I have discovered that if we start off with those two elements being played together, the rest of the overdubs will be easier to blend in; often it sounds as if we recorded everything live with four or five (sometimes six or seven) musicians playing all at once, when in actuality it's often just the two of us and the magic of overdubs.

I don't worry or look at which "Model" I'm using on the POD; I just twist and tweak until it sounds good, then we record.

I've been hearing a lot of good things about the Egnater Rebel concerning tone & build quality... I haven't seen one to try yet. In fact, I don't know much about them at all. How do you like it 63 supro?
