Sometimes I do it sometimes I don,t. Try different ways because you get different results and can add new things to your playing. I see nothing wrong with doing it because wath comes out is what matters.

I'm in agreement with the posters that there is no hard and fast right or wrong way. I have used my pinky finger as a rest in the past but the lower I slung my guitar I found the spot were at full arm extension my hand is centered above the strings and am able to strike them precisely because after a short time of playing in that way I feel or know exactly were I need to strike each note. Now if I can figure out a similar trick for my fretting hand I might have a breakthrough of sorts.

Sometimes my pinky is anchored on the guitar, sometimes not--it all depends what I'm playing--if I'm strumming chords it's usually not anchored, for example--but when doing lead stuff it helps me gauge the distance between strings when switching.

When I taught guitar I taught both ways--to use it when it's useful--if any of those students had other teachers after me (And I know the ones who kept taking lessons after I stopped teaching did) they may have thought I didn't know what I was doing--or they may have agreed.

I used to do the same thing, and I felt it did affect my picking technique. I read in one of the guitar mags years back that if it was something you considered a bad habit, instead of anchoring the pinky, try to rest the nail on the pick guard. You will get that same secure feeling, but the nail will slide around the guard when you need to.

This has lots of close ups of both hands.
My classical has a wear mark the size of a quarter from my pinky, gotta start working on my form.

I never got into closed hand picking. I like having my fingers out in case I need to quickly eye gouge someone.

Actually, while my pinky may be on the top of the guitar for electric stuff, it seldom is when I'm finger picking-especially when playing classical.

Always play guitar defensively! You can never be too careful.
