When I was about 20 years old, I had enough money to buy a MIM Strat, red in color. It was the best guitar that I had up until then. One day,I decided to do a little custom work to it. I removed all of the hardware and the neck and tied it to the back of my car and dragged it around on the street. This was all done with the supervision of some friends. It actually looked pretty cool. Then, one of my friends thought it would be a good idea to put it on the grill for a burned effect. So we did. Unfortunately, when the time came to remove it, I did not have a device to do so and the wood began to burn. I did finally remove it. One of my buddies dropped it on the cement and it broke into 2 pieces. I was able to put it back together but it was never the same. looked cool, but never the same.

Hello Nick,

Man, that is one funny story
The dumbest thing I ever did was paint a strat
red yellow and silver sunburst. No words can
describe how bad this looked, I should have thrown
"it" on the grille. This was many years ago.

Cheers.

Dumbest thing I ever did to a guitar was to blame it for not playing right when I was piss drunk. I tossed that nice Takamine 12 string across the room, breaking it's neck. Even now, 30 years later, I still feel stupid over it. The nice thing was I found a shop called the Guitar Hospital on the Black Horse Pike in So. Jersey. They actually came to your house in an old Caddilac ambulance and picked up your damaged axe on a gurney and took it away for emergency care. Very cool. They did a great job repairing that Takamine and I used it for several more years. It actually played better then new. Man am I glad I gave up drinkin.

I left my Acoustic outside the tent when I was partying in a camp ground. It was gone the next morning. This was about about 10-12 years ago.

I pulled my old Red Knob amplifier off the top of my chest of draws with a coiled chord. You should have heard the reverb when it hit the floor.

I am in the middle of doing the dumbest thing I have ever done to any of my guitars. I am doing an extreme self Relic job on my Black Stratocaster like John Mayers black one. I am only doing this because I have 3 other strats that I baby and I just thought it would be a fun project. Other than that my 11 other guitars are all well taken care of.

The worst thing I ever did was to stop playing it. Between work and raising a family I didn`t have the time but things change and I`m back on it again.

I hear ya. Between having a toddler and overtime, I had to make a change. So I bought myself a Tele and have played it, even if only for 10 minutes, every day for the last 3 months. I even bought a bass and do the same thing with it. My toddler joins in most of the time. It is a win-win for the whole family. Keep playing!

When I put my Kluson tuners on some years ago, the stupidest thing I did was forget to drill pilot holes for the screws. As I was screwing them in the headstock cracked down all six tuner holes, clean across the whole headstock. But I was able to fix it though. It's been fine ever since, but I just can't believe I forgot those pilot holes. I guess I was so excited about getting them on that I just wasn't thinking straight.

Maybe someone here at Fender would have the demographics, but I remember reading that the average guitar player gives it up somewhere around 26. Wife, kids, mortgage, car payments, insurance...well, you know. Funny thing is there's a big jump around 50 that lasts for 10 or 15 years. That midlife thing.

I've done a lot of dumb things to guitars.

I painted one of 'em. On another I carved my initials in it along with a few obscenities. One of 'em I smashed at a show. On another I cut the body up and totally screwed up the balance because I wanted it to look like a telecaster.

All of those (with the exception of the Kramer Focus..right handed) were right handed guitars though and all of 'em were under 200 bucks when purchased...A couple of 'em I sold before I bought my first honest-to-goodness left handed guitar in 1988 or 89.

(But...I've never done that to any Fender product! So...Ha!)
