I've found some cassettes of my own compositions I did back in around 1990, they were down the back of a cabinet and I'd forgoten I'd done these and they are not too bad.
Rough around the edges but I'm sure I could re-vamp these if I can get these kinda digitalised somehow and downloaded into some kind of program.
So any of you super intelligent tech guys, know how I can get a bunch of cassette music into my pc.
Cheers guys.

It's pretty easy to do if you just have the right inputs and software.

In the past I've got some music to the pc by running a cord from the headphone jack of a boombox to the mic input/recorder input on the pc. On my computer now I have audio and video inputs because when I bought it I was planning on converting all of the old family VHS to the pc. (that was a huge job, 32 discs later!)

Anyway, I use Nero Wave editor to capture and edit the audio that I've captured but I know that a guy I work with uses Audacity, which is free. I've never used it but the interface looks similar to Nero for editing and saving files. Here's a link to Audacity.

Sorry I'm not more help but maybe this is some help.

You can use the free Audacity Audio Editor http://audacity.sourceforge.net/.

You'll need a 'Y' stereo patch cord that has two RCA on the 'Y' side to a mini-stereo plug like this one http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3240426, this is only an example, you can find one cheaper at Walmart.

The RCAs plug into the cassette player, and the mini-stereo plug goes into your PC soundcard 'Line-in'. Once you installed Audacity, open it, chose 'Line-in' as recording source, play the cassette to set the record levels. If the record levels are too high, you'll get distortion, so set into the 'yellow'.

Once you've done this, than record the cassette's contents. You'll than have to separate (edit) the tracks, and than Export the tracks as WAV files.

Roxio LP Converter is the real deal in my book. It comes with software and all the hardware you will need. Not very expensive, but very well engineered. Who knows, after moving your tapes over you might want to take a shot at your LPs.
I've tried a few different routes, and this is the one that has given the best result.

Cheers,
John.E

Thanks, so far guys I'll consider all of these and see which one does it for me. I'll certainly come back on this one, because this could be a project for some of the forum guys, that might want to be involved.
I'll explain later when I give it some brain time.
Cheers guy's, I knew you would step up. 8)

You could also buy one of those boom boxes that has both cassette and cd and can write to cd from the cassette player.

A couple of Christmases ago my daughters gave me a Memorex recording component that converts 45s,albums and cassettes to CD without the need of computer.I don't know how it accomplishes it but it takes everything from real time and digitizes it and quite well too.I've seen them on the Memorex website and it has a 40s look of the old Philco shortwave radios.I've seen similar ones advertized at Sears for about $250 too.

Great thread Rhumba! I've wanted to convert cassette to CD for the longest time, vinyl as well!

LP's are a little trickier in that you need a phone preamp and can't run a turntable straight into the computer. Or you need the turntable plugged into the reciever and receiver connects to the computer.

Using the "line in" or jack labelled with a microphone is most common since that's something standard on most computers.

Yep, that's true, but there are USB turntables like the ION http://www.amazon.com/Ion-Audio-Profile-LP-Turntable/dp/B0029QRA1U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317046750&sr=8-1.

I brought a iKey Plus Portable USB Recorder
http://www.ikey-audio.com/products/items/249 a few years ago on closeout. The iKey has a phono preamp built-in, so I could still use my Sony turntable, and it records to a flash drive, this way I didn't tie-up my PC while converting.

DAK http://www.dak.com/reviews/2020story.cfm?Ref=G&PM=LPCD&type={ifsearch:OVSrch}{ifcontent:OVCont}&Srh=USB_Turntable_GS also makes a PC interface.

Ok, guys i have sent off for a box that converts to cd, for the moment I feel it's important to get this down on cd first and then I can mess about and experiment later with the tech gear.
Like I said, I'll come back with this, for anyone who is interested, I will give these to all those who want to give these a shot within the forum. We can all work with these together.
They are out-takes from my library music and stuff that we never got around to using. It's new age mystical-ethereal clips, well long and short actually not exactly short jingles.
I'll explain better later.
Cheers for your help guys. 8)
