Just read this thread.

That's very cool guys. Sounds like a great day out. I've never met Trev Wilkinson, but I have a lot of respect for him based on what I've read, on his guitar hardware and on his Fretking guitars. The guitar tech I use (hi Joe!) knows him quite well apparently and he has told me a few tales too.

I have some Wilkinson PAFs on a couple of Vintage guitars I have (incredible value if you need a good guitar for not a lot of cash). One of which is the Lemon Drop (Peter Green/Gary Moore relic tribute) - same as the one Nikki has laying about in his back garden.. I love the guitar, but especially the pickups - A really good honky vintage bridge and a nice flutey neck. I have 2 Seymour Duncan Seth Lovers on another guitar and they sound very much alike. I might actually prefer the Wilkinsons, but you can't really tell when the pickups are on 2 different guitars.

Like you two, my future defintiely includes a Fretking guitar at some stage (most likely a Corona 60HB)

Nikki, I thought you'd cannibalised the Lemon Drop's Wilkinsons for another guitar? Unless I dreamt it - and thats not exactly unknown these days..

Good thread Ceri.

Ceri, the most wonderful non-fiction story that I've read in a long long time. Nicki, solid gold with a huge soul and naughty. You two meeting again on a tech mission, thought you'd retired. The photos are great! That you met and spoke with Trevor Wilkinson is truly amazing! If your sponsors on this score were searching for answers to important formulas you did what you gentlemen always do, victoriously.

Oooh you provocative fellow GTG. Obviously that's a very loaded incitement incitement to cause a row, from my perspective.

Trev's answer was, "Because it's cheap and stains just like cherry wood". Which apparently is what Leo told him.

I found the question, "where does Swamp Ash come from?" and Trev's concluding statement about maple. Far more entertaining.

Wow!! That would have been a fun time for me too. I love talking gear, and would have been hanging on every word myself.

So Ceri, you're saying that his '59 PAF humbucker line could possibly be made to the actual older '59 PAF Gibson specs? Or am I understanding that wrong? That raises my eyebrow a little. I love Gibson humbuckers myself.

Blertles.. There's a chance my band Haleamano might be heading your way sometime next year. We just played a show with some of your great countrymen, and a great band, Katchafire. The show was a huge success! We're keeping in contact with their manager about a possible New Zealand tour. I'll let you know if it ever happens ok. 8)

I'm with GTG looking for an answer of my own. Maybe I'm the only one whoe doesn't know but what's the reason for the big headstock on the basses?

Never knew of this gent but very interesting.

Ted, the point is that there are no original specs to the PAF 'bucker. Just the way they were designed then not built to spec.

I've got that guitar back now and will be stripping the buckers from it.

The bass headstock size is to eliminate dead spots around the 16th fret area KissFan.
As said before, alder because it was cheap, readily available and stained to look just like cherry wood which was very popular for furniture at the time. Sonic quality played no part in the decision.

Great Thread and Story Ceri and Nik.

I have been lurking over on Audizine these past few months so the Fender Forum has been quite sporadic.
Getting ready for a cruise from Danbury Ct to LimeRock Race track and on to Stratton Vt on the 8th of October...Called Avantoberfest.
So the guitars are being played but getting the 1.8T dialed in is priority.
Actually have to select a musical selection...probably burn a compilation...
Any suggestions on Absolutely Must Have tunes... :?: :?:

BTW....Almost forgot...just commited to an Aerodyne Strat in translucent blue with Seymour Duncan's. The shop had hoped it would sell with an upgrade but a year later it was still there.
I really hate going to the shelter and not rescuing a lost soul...( I'm the same with canine's )

Absolute must have tunes on my I-thing. Black Country Communion. After trying my hardest to get into this new generation of blues players, I still can't. Bonamassa fares better than the rest. Both BCC albums are gems. Like classic Thin Lizzy meets all the good bits of 70's blues rock.
Brads new band "The Unlucky 8's" are well entrenched too. Brilliant post-punk pop sensibilities. Like Elvis Costello meets The Cars, meets Joe Jackson, meets Mick Jones from the Clash.
A local'ish band called DC Fontana for anyone who likes their jazz on the stylish side.

Aside from that, lots of 10CC, ZZ Top and Motorhead.
But thats just me.

Now on to further tempt that rascal Ceri.

These are ready and waiting. Wilkinson PAF's. Nickel/Silver base plate and cover.

Nice to be back at the kitchen table again. You don't want to see what I've got planned for the rest of the guitar.

Good to see you here Nick
I only know one person who met Leo and that meeting was a brief one while he was gigging in California and the entertainer he was with had some old time connections....but the few words he got from Leo in those minutes were precious to him.
Y'all were very fortunate and thanks for sharing the experience...told as only you two could do. :D

Thanks Niki...

Ironically I was playing " The Wall Street Shuffle " and "Clockwork Creep "this morning.
Wifey was like " Who is that " to which i replied......Singing....
" Up Yours..Up Mine...But up everybody's that takes time..But we're working on it.."

She didn't get it, but she is an absolute Blues Fan, long before me, many moon's ago she used to go out with one of the guy's in Roomful Of Blues.

I'll have to check out your suggestions...but I do have my must have list...
Divinyls of course...Pigalle....Goanna...Midnight Oil....
Anne Sophie Mutter as well as Nadja Sonnenberg and Lara St John.
Then Rammstein has to fit in..it is after all an Audi Avant event first and foremost.
Blues I'll have to be a bit retro...Climax Blues Band...Savoy Brown.
The rest well we'll see......
