It depends on your definition of reasonably priced. I really like Audio Technica and Sennheiser mics. And personally, I prefer condenser mics. I feel like they have a more natural sound both recorded and live.

Here's, the mic I currently use live...

It is hands down the best mic I've ever used and the price is definitely reasonable for a mic of this caliber. It can also be powered with one AA battery, or phantom power.

Otherwise you always have the option to go with an industry workhorse like a Shure SM58, they run about $100 and can be found on MANY stages. Also, the Senneheiser e935 is a nice mic; a little pricier than the SM58 but definitely worth the price.

+1 on the Sennheisers. The e835 is the same price as the venerable old Shure SM58 and is much "clearer" for the money.

But you can't buy the right mic for your voice without hearing them. Go to GC or any store with a decent pro audio section and have them plug every mic in your range into a PA so you can try it. I just did this with a female vocalist who asked me to help her choose a mic, and she tried every Shure, Sennheiser, A-T and Audix priced from 99 bucks to 169, dynamics and condensers. She ended up with a Sennheuser e838... kinda like the 835, but with an extended high end response that fit her like a pair of leather jeans.

She could have paid less or much more and bought the wrong mic either way. Go hear them.

I'm picking up another Shure SM58 today,I've been using them for ages and they do the job for me,takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'.
I keep letting them get away in sales of equipment and giving them to my sons...I don't care for doing a lot of singing and when there's no mic in front of you it's easy to get out of some of it.

I've been using the same Peavey mic for about 20 years and it still performs as well as new and is rugged enough to double as a hammer.

I like the SM58 Beta. It's got a tighter pattern and sounds a little warmer than the SM 58 but it definitely costs more than the 58 too.

Could you list a price range? The specific mics mentioned are good mics, but not one is under approximately $100. That might sound like a reasonable price to some people but your idea of reasonable could be lower.

I have a Shure mic that was in the $100 range when new but I think that it's been discontinued-it is the PE 588.It's a great all around mic for vocals and even instrument micing.

I have a few vocal mics. My personal favourite and current stage mic of choice, is a Sennheiser E 855 model. Lovely mic to look at and hold - huge clarity. Beats the 58 hands down on my voice.

Prior to that, I used an Audio Technica "Midnight Blues" MB3000L for a few years. Great mic - dark bluey/grey colour with an almost rubbery feel. Neodymium magnet capsule made it quite advanced in it's day. These days it's my spare in case anything happens to the Sennheiser, or if we have a guest vocalist join us. Slightly more than a SM58 when I bought it. No longer made I think. A second hand MB3000L (or even the cheaper MB2000L) should be snapped up if you see one. Because it's NOT a Shure SM58 it will be cheaper than a '58 second hand. But again is arguably a better mic.

Another one to look out for (old stock or 2nd hand) is the Peavey DY22 Black Diamond. I keep mine for female vocalists. (It seems to dial nicely into a rich smoky alto voice). Dont be put off by that though - it's a good mic for a male vocalist too.

One last mic is the obligatory SM58. I thought I'd better have one as it's the industry standard affordable stage mic I guess, but I've only ever used it once - and that was to mic up my Fender BJ at a louder than usual gig.

Obviously all of these are dynamic mics.

I can't see me giving up the Sennheiser now, but I'd love to try a Neuman Dynamic..

I used one of those at a friend's gig. He had a bag full of them! I found it to be a good solid mic for the money and you won't go wrong with it. Nice if you could try it first, but I appreciate that bargain internet shopping doesn't allow for that.

Do they do the same model but without the switch? You'll be paying a bit more for a switchable, and the need for a switch is questionnable.

Check these out. Not the best microphone in the world, but Alice Cooper was using them for a while and still may be for all I know. They are pretty durable. I bought 3 of them about 5 or 6 years ago and they all still work. We use Shure SM-58's at most gigs, but have gigged with these some too and we always use them at rehearsals. Behringer XM8500 Ultravoice is the model. If you have a local Behringer dealer I'd try one there. They look like an SM-58 but perform differently, more like an SM-57 with a windscreen. For the money, they work and seem to hold up very well. No on-off switch on them, but I find on-off switches a liability in a stage mic.

Not sure if you're still looking for a mic or not Jake, but another mic I had the chance to hear today that really impressed me is this one : http://www.guitarcenter.com/Digital-Ref ... sid=drv200 : at 60bucks I don't think you can beat it. Very nice, natural sounding vocal mic.
