END OF STORY

Hi iaperinafender: I was there that night and it was good. But greatest ever? No.

Hi Skirt: you are very young so you can be forgiven for not knowing. However.

This is close to the correct answer:

Rock trivia: the show before that one took place at Kilburn in North London a month or two earlier, was also filmed and is now at last available on DVD. They hadn't played for a while and were a bit rough, which is why the footage wasn't used in the film, The Kids Are Alright; so Jeff Stein had them do the above numbers again at Shepperton a few weeks later. But the Kilburn show has a special place in my heart because it so happens it was the first proper grown up rock gig I ever attended (with my dad - aaaaah). You HAD to be there. 8)

Now that IS right. See the above clips.

I have The Who's performance from the Isle of Wight and
that's gotta be in the top five somewhere. :?:

Yes indeed. On another day and in another mood I could easily have named that one.

I for one ain't seriously going to argue with anyone over that!

But still... :D

I don't know about theoretically best live performances, but I'm old enough to have a few to pick from (unfortunately). Saw The Band's reunion tour with Dylan. Dylan performed electric versions of Blood on the Tracks with the Band--all outstanding, AND, The Band also performed their standards including The Night They Drove ol Dixie Down.

Saw Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick Tour. Opened with about 40 minutes of the title track, they finish, and Ian Anderson says, "For our second number..."

Saw Pink Floyd touring Dark Side at Denver University Arena--just gives you an idea what a cult act they were before Dark Side.

Saw the Rolling Stones with Billy Preston when Mick Taylor played lead. This would be about the time of the Yah Yahs Tour.

Saw Skynyrd in a 300 seat concert bar soon after Pronounced was released. Free Bird was pretty impressive in that venue.

Saw George Thorogood in a smaller venue than that.

ZZ Top, yep, but I'd say the best live performance I ever saw was The Who touring Who's Next. Did that album and a lot of stuff from Tommy. Amazing show.

I'd say any concert by Rammstein is the greatest rock performance.

I'm afraid I owe you guys a big apology.

Earlier this year, I informed you that "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" by Nirvana is the greatest rock song in the history of the world. But I was imprecise. While it is, no doubt, true that "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" is the greatest rock song of all time, I neglected to inform you that Nirvana's performance of "D-7" (by the Wipers) at Reading in 1992 was actually the greatest single live performance of a rock song ever recorded.

If Eddie Van Halen picked up a guitar 373,000,000,000 times in his life, he never played a solo that approaches Kurt's solo--which consists of about 4 notes--here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oBHEvYAJnY&ob=av2e

So my bad for not pointing this out earlier. All apologies.

You are forgiven only because I thought every live concert I saw was the best starting with my first in 65 at the Chicago International Amphitheater. A Dick Clark sponsored event (that I can't find record of) featuring many contemporary for that time rock and roll acts of which the two I remember were the Rascals and the Four Tops. Trust me if you saw those two acts in their prime Nirvana wouldn't be your favorite. Oh yeah and I saw Jimi and his Experience at the Hollywood Bowl in Sept 68 and the Cream in Oct 68 at the Chicago Coliseum third incarnation located at 15th and Wabash. Saw the Doors there twice in 68. Now it's getting silly, too many to go on, give yourself a chance young tiger there'll be plenty of best live concerts in your lifetime.

Deep Purple - Made in Japan.

Long before they outstayed their welcome, Purple were an incredible band at the absolute peak of their individual and collective games. This seminal, legendary rock album recorded in Tokyo and Osaka demonstrates this perfectly.

IMHO, the finest live album ever made..

Listen for instructions to the soundman: "Let's have everything louder than everything else.."
