It appears that after 31 years together as a band, the members of REM are going their separate ways.

Sad news for me -- they've been one of my all-time favorite bands since I was in high school. But I think they probably said all they had to say musically and it was simply time to move on.

Thanks for the music, boys -- I'll miss you!

My wife and I got a chance to see them perform live in Toronto a few years back -- fantastic show! 31 years is indeed a great run...

R.E.M.? :D

I saw them play at S.D.S.U. long ago. I think they called it the Construction tour.

Bad Religion is still here. Just another 31 year old band worth mentioning.

This is good. :D

I am always impressed when people are clever in multiple languages. I was in a poker group with a man from Norway that knew six languages and he was very clever (and funny) in English! :D

REM falls into a strange musical category for me...a category that includes U2, the Beatles and Elvis Presley.

I absolutely love every other song by those groups/artists. The songwriting, the performance, the way the song flows...wonderful! For REM, these songs are "Crush With Eyeliner", "What's The Frequency Kenneth", "Everybody Hurts", and so on.

Conversely, I detest every other song by those same artists. I can't hardly get past three bars into the song before I turn it off. For REM, these are "Shiny Happy People", "Man on the Moon", and so on.

The first album I bought by REM was "Monster", and it started that trend on loving half the disc and detesting the other half...the trend that extended to every other album I have bought of theirs this far.

So, I guess I'm half-sad they're breaking up...

I was a fan - a BIG fan - for a long time. I'm the same age as those guys and started listening to them with Chronic Town. I still love most of their stuff. But honestly, after Bill Berry left the band, they lost "it." They were in trouble before Berry left - Monster and New Adventures in Hi-Fi felt like they were struggling for relevance, and it showed - but the departure of Berry finished them, and it was painful watching them straggle on when their hearts obviously weren't in it.

That being said, it was a great run. From Chronic Town all the way up to Automatic for the People, they were brilliant.

Now maybe all those REM fans can pick up on Robyn Hitchcock, the guy who Peter Buck has been touring with more than the band he started...

There's little doubt post-"Automatic" REM is more hit-and-miss. I remember being disappointed with 'Monster' when it came out and I didn't even bother with 'New Adventures in Hi-Fi.' But there was still a lot of good music made even during the post-Bill Berry years. I really enjoyed the album 'Accelerate,' in particular. But I can't disagree that their stuff from the 80s was far-and away their best.

R.E.M. peaked with Automatic For The People. Definitely their best album, IMHO.
