Tell your wife the plan (this is an all important first step)
Sell what you can to raise funds
Get what you can in gift cards (or cash donations)
Save the rest as your budget allows (making sure mommy and baby do not suffer privation)
Buy the guitar

I'm saving up for the new Blacktop P Bass in that pearl white...I'm a lady bass player and I get similar flack from my hubby but I think he's starting to realise how much I am into playing even if I'm not that good....

How about trading in or selling on craigslist all golf clubs, skis, fishing equipment etc... as you won't be using them much. Take the cash buy the guitar and point out that you did it for the family as you can play the guitar AT home.

Well, I posted an old stereo amplifier on Kijiji yesterday and sold it for $75. Guess who has the money? Not me!

Why oh why do we guitar players have GAS? Its not like I actually NEED another guitar. I don't realy have that much time to play right now as it is, let alone with a new baby in the house. Will a new guitar really make me better? Didn't I just get a new guitar earlier this year that I have barely played? Even after I ask myself all these questions and answer them seriously, I STILL WANT IT!

Just one of the joys of marriage that you never really appreciate until long after the fact. Kids come with loads of collateral bills, guitars not as much. But wives like mine love the kids to death, and the guitars not as much.

The deal in our house is that all the $$ I make on the band, or other odd jobs, is my "fun" money to spend on whatever I want. So my guitars, and my KISS collection, and amps or other misc toys are my responsibility, she may not like them but she can't complain about 'em either. Works for us, 5 guitars right now and if I save enough for another it's all good.

You have answered your own question if you take away the last sentence.

You want this new guitar, but you want it less than what you already have.

Ahh, such is life. I already have everything I need. A loving wife and a growing family, a house, 2 cars and good job, and a substantial gear collection. More guitars is just the icing on the cake!
