I loved the sound of music, was endlessly fascinated by rhythm and harmony and how it made me feel. I still am.

I didn't pick up a guitar because I saw the Beatles on Sullivan (although I did), because I thought it would get me girls (I found out early on how that was actually done), or because I wanted to be Hendrix (I didn't). I just wanted to make music and the guitar was the only instrument anybody in my family played (my uncle Bob was a good folk acoustic player).

Well, I was "encouraged" to play by my love of music, and wanting to play like John Mayer. Now, it's because I want to play like Stevie Ray. :)

My grandfather has been playing for 49 years now and my dad has been playing for close to 30 years so seeing them play in a band growing up always made me want to learn to play and when I was 12 years old their bass player quit and they told me I could play bass with them if I wanted and I learned there and then and never looked back. It has been an amazing experience playing with family.

I don't remember why I started at first, but now it's the blues that drives my passion for playing the guitar.

...Especially SRV and Hendrix.

Way back when, my high school put on an Air Band competition. We did Kiss's Rock 'n' Roll all Night more or less as a joke. I borrowed a friend's guitar and it just kinda felt right. I've been playing since. I had to be Paul Stanley as I was the only one with some chest hair.

I was encouraged to play guitar by my mom because as a kid I used to sing stuff (probably off key) all the time, so I think they figured I could be musical without have to hear me sing.

I won't get into why I joined or started any particular bands in the past, but the current thing I am involved with, I just became a member becuase I was hanging out at a lot of their practices, and figured if I didn't pick up an instrument, then I'd end up being their roadie. Around the time I had this thought, they asked if I wanted to join, as they knew I had played in the past, so I just said sure....

Because I've always dug rock 'n roll in all its myriad forms and if any instrument exemplifies the genre, it's the electric guitar.

Chris Squire and Gordon Lightfoot (thanks to my mom's collection) then I discovered Bill Wyman and Geddy Lee

It was my father.

He was a dixieland jazz trumpet player, and did a lot of gigging in Sacramento back in the 60's. He died when I was 10.

The only thing he really left behind was an old Kay acoustic guitar. I decided to pick it up....so I could be "closer" to him in spirit.

All of the other stuff was bonus, but that was the initial reason.

I don't know if this makes much sense, but that's what got me started. And, my personality type just fit right in with playing incessantly...especially in my teenage years.
