Johnny Rivers played at the last James Burton Guitar Fest, and I was thrilled to him play 'Secret Agent Man' live, and thrilled to see a video on YT.
http://youtu.be/fXhr7PWS53A

I still think it sounds like he saying 'Secret Asian Man'

There is also a cool ezy lesson on how to play the main riff http://youtu.be/tV6iX3Yd8FM, although Rivers slides the chords, not the single notes like she plays.

I've often heard Johnny Rivers called "The Musician's Musician" where he puts on such a highly charged professional show.

Great post...always like this song and Johnny Rivers in particular. Nice tone too, Gibson ES 335 through a Fender amp :!:

This is one of the songs that drove me to playing guitar in the first place. Patrick McGoohan starring as the Secret Agent Man and Johnny Rivers doing the theme song. I recorded the song off the TV to work on it. It was one of the first songs I sang in my second band in the 60s. Still love it and still do it!

Indeed, one of the timeless tracks from the era.

Right up there with "Time Won't Let Me" by the Outsiders and "Dirty Water" by the Standells.

Yeah, one of those songs that brings back all sorts of memories!
Thanks.

He does put on a great show..at least when I saw him about 5 years ago. I'll have to keep my eye out for him coming round.

Holy Schmoly, Arjay! Time Won't Let Me is my all-time favorite song EVER - even have the original vinyl! Too bad The Outsiders turned down the chance to release Bend Me, Shape Me! And me and the partner are still performing Dirty Water as well. Schweet!

Don't forget "Judy In Disguise", "Lightning Strikes", "Solitary Man", and "The Cheater", Dennis.

The quintessential malt-shop memories!

Those two Rivers songs plus Memphis were part of our set list at the Cafe WHA?? I used to work Lonnie Mack's feel into that song. 46 years ago I also had a '58 Stratocaster, a '61 Fender Concert amp, a Danelectro spring reverb, and hair on the top of my head, up on that stage. :?

Poodah!! {see they can't do much in the way of @#$%&* to poodah], But them that knows, knows.

BTW: See the way those guys were dressed back then.....THAT's why we didn't play guitars that looked like they were dragged behind a truck, that's why my Strat went out to California for a refinish, and the rest of the story I've already told. :?
