This guy is a living legend. I have always associated Johnny Winter with those oddly shaped Gibsons, but here he is at Woodstock in '69 playing what I believe is a Fender XII with six strings. Were you there?

For your listening pleasure, Meantown Blues.

I associate Johhny Winter with the Gibson Firebird of course. He really makes those mini 'buckers squeal.

It's good to see him back again, even though he is now very frail. Being an albino his health was always delicate, but for many years he was literally kept in a fug of narcortics by his crooked management, while they robbed him of everything (allegedly).

I saw him on the 2007 Clapton Crossroads Festival DVD, tearing up a Firebird fueled slide storm with Derek Trucks and his band. His fragility meant that he was playing in a seated position, but even so, he ripped his way through "Anyday" and "Highway 61 Revisited". His voice was surprisingly strong and his playing as good as I remember from the early 1970s.

I hope he's still playing/performing. I did read that he was booked for the 2010 Crossroads festival.

Here he is in that 2007 Crossroads show:
Enjoy ~

The man has something special for sure, and has had since very early on.
Here he is in Toronto in 1970, still with the Fender.

I play a bit of slide myself and these look like a good guitar for the job, big and heavy with a wide, flat fingerboard.

One more clip, sometime between Woodstock and the 2007 clip posted by Adey.

Not many guitarists can sit and play some deep authentic Delta blues and seamlessly stand up and shred on the same guitar, in the same song.

Mark, I was talking with Dennis Drugan Johnny's old bass guitar player last evening and remembered to ask about this guitar, and, yes, Johnny still has it.lol.

Last year Johnny played this small club just down the street from me. Solo acoustic, straight blues, I was shocked to see how frail he had become but he still put everything he had into it. Hope he keeps doing it for many years to come.

Muddy Waters referred to Johnny as his son. Let's hope his health continues to improve.
I heard he has put out an album this year, so that's cool.

Thanks for that info Solid BLS. I've been checking out the Fender XII. They were discontinued in 1970, so they ain't common. There's a few on ebay for 3-4 grand. I like the look of 'em :D

I guess it's still a bargain price for a 60's Fender. As rare as the rare Strats 8)

What's Johnny playing here? Jaguar?

Image

Johnny always said he loved the Strat sound, but couldn't play one, so he switched mainly to Gibsons. Most recently, he favours the Lazer built by Erlewine in Texas.
These apparently play like a Gibson and sound like a Strat.

....hmmm not sure about this, I guess it's light, not very bluesy looking is it? It does look a bit like a cigar box guitar though

Thanks to the JW fans. Please share your thoughts on the man and his guitars.

Fender Duo-sonic with what seems to be a modified tailpiece.

Loved that shot of JW playing his Fender Electrix XII through a quartet of JBL-equipped Twin Reverbs......same set-up I saw him play at the Freedom Factory in Kansas City back in '71.

Rock on!

8)
