At 2:32 in the next video Paul breaks a string and switches to his first hofner this is a good example of the different sound they both got.

Thanks Arjay and Solid body love songs. We played a venue in mid February 1963 (I was 15, and had been playing 18 months). It was at a place called Olham Astoria, about 30 miles from where the band all lived . We played on a Saturday afternoon to an audience of 6-14 year olds (the management's idea was , leave your kids here for the afternoon, while you do your shopping , they got a packet of crisps and a soft drink in the admission price and they had quite a few "minders" looking after the kids). When we asked who played there the week before, the manager said "The Beatles, two shows, one in the afternoon (to the kiddy audience) and one at night to a proper audience". He told us that Brian Epstein tried everything to get them out of the contract, offering the manager Billy J Kramer and the dakotas, Cilla Black AND The Fourmost in their place, but the manager refused, so they actually did a show to young kids. Here are pics from the second show.http://www.beatlesource.com/savage/1963 ... toria.html

Cool pics, Ted! And an interesting anecdote as well.

I always liked Billy J & The Daks. Also Gerry + P'makers and the Tremelos. All the "British Invasion" stuff.

Arjay

I've been enjoying reading this thread and looking at some of the pics.
The Beatles were an amazing group of musicians, and like we learned in this thread about the amps...there's still alot of good info out there.
I have a 14 year old nephew who is a huge John Lennon fan and he asks me questions all the time....I just never got to see the Beatles in person,myself...one of those missed opportunities when I was a kid.

On the CD "Les Paul and Friends" you can hear the 5-year old Steve Miller doing his debut recording. Never hurts to start out young.

You'll find an interesting bio on Steve Miller in a recent issue of Vintage Guitar. Notwithstanding the fact that his dad had had a close business relationship with Les Paul, his dad thought crazy Steve's leaving college in the last semester of his fourth year to pursue music. His mom was all for it. You need to read his story, like so many others who are presently 'our heroes' to see how the web wove and made the difference. How many, out there, of the same vintage, already had professional stage and recording experiences under their belts before the likes of the aforementioned ever did. The complexity of what makes the difference is so great I've long given up bemoaning it all. Then there's 'The 27 Club'. You have to accept the fact that, in the long run, you might be better off.
