Noone screams like that at concerts anymore. Why, in the early '60's were teen girls into hollerin' at concerts? Was it just a cultural thing at that point in time? No wonder parents were scared for the well being of their daughters - listenin' to all that rock 'n roll.

By the late '60's it seems that phenomenon stopped.

Also, was it really as loud as they say? They must have been at 85dB tops to be drowned out by the audience. Ringo said he couldn't hear his toms.

I have been to shows where you could barely hear a person shouting into your ear trying to tell you something because the band was so loud. That must be amazing to not be able to hear the band because the girls are caterwaulin'!

It must have been tough for them to perform their first concerts because the were only using AC30s or maybe AC50s at best-I forget exactly which ones.By the time they had finished performing live they had progressed to the 100W Super Beatle amps and they still were drowned out by the constant screaming.I think that the screaming phenonemon went back as far as a young Frank Sinatra in the 40s and progressed through Elvis and culmenated with the Beatles,Stones et al of The British Invasion.

No Beatle ever played a Super Beatle at a Beatles Concert. In fact, I seriously doubt any of them ever played one.

I talked to a guy once who was in a band that played a few gigs that opened shows for the Beatles.... later,he naturally watched from the wings as they played,he said the noise was deafening and there was no way to hear themselves through the monitors, but from what he could hear,he said the vocal harmonies were as perfect as they could be under the circumstances....he said it was amazing that they could even pull it off.

It started in the '50s with Elvis and even by the time of the Beatles Rock 'n Roll wasn't ready for stadiums. It wasn't till around Woodstock and Altamont that they actually started to get the sound systems to support those kind of crowds.

for a few examples see http://www.scottymoore.net/Chicago.html and http://www.scottymoore.net/vancouver57.html

This thread sure brings back memories. The night of that Shea Stadium concert my home was situated roughly 2 miles south of Shea as the crow flies. One of the north/south streets ended at a dead end overlooking a large cemetery and it was a clear line of sight to the Roosevelt Ave area where the stadium stood. One could always see the lights when the Mets were playing at night, but THAT evening, the din arising from that location was low but clearly audible. I can still hear 'em yelling

When I think about what it would have been like to be at one of the later Beatles gigs, the image that comes to mind is the way Tom Wolfe described it in the Electric Kool Aid Acid Test, which sounded unpleasant to say the least.

Of course it was probably grand so long as you weren't tripping balls.

Cool pics, Ted!

When I saw them at Candlestick Park (SF) in August of '66 I was so damn far from the stage -- center-right field, up in the "nosebleeds" -- I couldn't really tell what their backline was. I'd always assumed that "the lads" were playing AC100's. I think I read that somewhere but now that's fully refuted and de-bunked. Thanks for definitively clearing the air.

Rawk on!

Here's a concert shot of the Beatles (venue unknown) that reveals still more about the gear they used onstage......

Image

The primary rigs seem to be the Vox AC100's mentioned earlier in the thread but while I've seen this photo a number of times before, I never noticed what appears to be a 5F6-A Fender Bassman in front of Ringo's drum riser. And further to the right is what looks like a 6G12 brownface Fender Concert. Next to it on the stage wing is another Fender that looks suspiciously like a Fender Vibroverb. And is that John standing directly in front of an Ampeg Porto-Flex?

It seems that there's still some Beatle history yet to be uncovered.

I saw the Beatles live in Toronto at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1965 and as the show progressed through the (excellent) supporting acts, the fans got louder and louder. When the Beatles came out, the noise from the crowd was deafening...well, not really 'cause all that were there can still hear, but it was REALLY, REALLY LOUD.
But the two things that stick in my mind are that all through their set everyone sang along to the songs they were playing, and Maple Leaf Gardens was constantly lit from the glare of camera flashes going off.
Keep in mind that in this bygone era, people were using flashbulbs. Lots and lots of flashbulbs...it was as if the sun had come out in the arena, illuminating all in an otherworldly glow.
Amazing......
