+1

I learned about the "in between" switch settings on my first Strat (a '66, purchased in '67 from the original owner) before I actually figured out how the two tone controls worked. I believe I read something about it in an old "Fretts" magazine article.

Arjay

Yeah man,the word was out and somebody close by would show you if you didn't know it.
Some people here just don't believe us older guys who were using the guitars back then....and if we knew it...Jimi knew it!

@ Negative Creep as with all Jimi's guitars my '65 Strat has the 3-way switch but it was a pretty common practice at the time to just balance the pickups 1/2 way between pup settings to get the "out-of-phase"tones.Some people used to wedge in a match to make sure that it didn't budge from these settings but as guitars got older and accumulated some crud ,jamming the switch became much easier.BTW the 5-way switch came out about 1978 and my '78 came with a 5-way switch which I promptly replaced with an old 3-way that I swapped with a guy who had an old '62.There were a lot of the pickup switching effects that Jimi made use of that I couldn't execute with the 5-way.The '78 was a lefty strung right.

The trick to catching the "in between" positions of the pickup switch came about in the early '60s,maybe earlier....everybody knew how to do it that was a regular Strat player...the 3 way switch would catch in the right place...sometimes people would stick something in there to hold it if it was loose, but with a good tight switch that was un necessary.
Fender came around and started adding the 5 way selector later like you mentioned.
Jimi would have known the trick easily.
Ah but how many times have you seen a pic of Jimi with cardboard or wood stuck in his pickup selector switch? Plus like i said anyone present at the recording has mentioned his use of the borrowed Tele

Like I said...if you had read my post...you could catch the in between positions on switches without sticking things in there...sometimes people did,but MY guitar didn't have to have anything....and so did many others.
Ah i see that now, this may be true but hey im goin with the solid facts that the people that were presnt at the recording say he used a Tele, thats a good as it gets for evidence, i mean nailing a tone doesnt necessarily require an exact replicated setup as far as guitslingers point goes
