Hey Joe definitely has to be Strat through Marshall. With my '65 Strat set with the neck/mid pups engaged through my 2204 I can nail the tone that Jimi got-now if only I could get my hands to work as well as his did.

you Bros are zoned, sipping brandy with Jimmy Mayes (Joey Dee Drummer, Jimi's homey) this after-noon. Great drummer best Brother a picture of Mitch, Jimmy and Billy on his table that I hadn't seen before. Keep the subject Jimi, my favorite.

In numerous interviews both Chas Chandler and Noel Redding had stated that Jimi used Noel's Tele and Twin Reverb to record Hey Joe and portions of Are You Experienced? Apparently Jimi was still in the habit of pawning his guitar and Chandler who financed the recordings and everything else at that time had run out of cash do he couldn't redeem it.

Indeed, Noel himself and Roger Mayer have stated this

Not denying your vast knowledge and ability to nail tones, but wasent the five way selector switch not added till after "Are You Experienced?" hit? Plus the sources are against you

Also, for some reason Ive noticed many instances where guitarist do not use their "signature" instrument for their "signature" song. For example: On "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Cobain used a Strat, for "Stairway to Heaven" solo Pagey used a Tele, "Won't Get Fooled Again" was recoreded with like a Gretsch through a Fender Bandmaster. This is just another example

The trick to catching the "in between" positions of the pickup switch came about in the early '60s,maybe earlier....everybody knew how to do it that was a regular Strat player...the 3 way switch would catch in the right place...sometimes people would stick something in there to hold it if it was loose, but with a good tight switch that was un necessary.
Fender came around and started adding the 5 way selector later like you mentioned.
Jimi would have known the trick easily.

Ah but how many times have you seen a pic of Jimi with cardboard or wood stuck in his pickup selector switch? Plus like i said anyone present at the recording has mentioned his use of the borrowed Tele

Like I said...if you had read my post...you could catch the in between positions on switches without sticking things in there...sometimes people did,but MY guitar didn't have to have anything....and so did many others.

+1

I learned about the "in between" switch settings on my first Strat (a '66, purchased in '67 from the original owner) before I actually figured out how the two tone controls worked. I believe I read something about it in an old "Fretts" magazine article.
