Hi Ralf: either way will work fine. Depends more on the look and feel you prefer than anything else. So your choice.

If you do decide to re-fin it then if your neck is any one of most Squier, MIM or MIA Fenders it will have a polyurethane lacquer on it. The exceptions include MIA Reissue models and some Signature guitars, which have nitrocellulose neck finishes. You can check that spec on the products pages of this website.

If you don't have a compressor and spray gun and still wish to do the job yourself then an easy way is to use polyurethane from an aerosol. Plasti-Kote make a good one which I have used many times - in fact, I always keep a can or two handy because it is much simpler than setting up my spray gun (and cleaning it after):

That's about £5/€6 and where I live can be easily found in shops. Or if not, a quick Google will find you any number of sellers who will mail it surface throughout Europe (illegal to send by air).

In my country we also have manufacturers who offer aerosol urethane in a range of transparent tints (for that vintage vibe) and in gloss, satin or matte finishes. Though the latter is unnecessary: a matte finish is easily obtained simply by not buffing the lacquer all the way to a high gloss. You may have similar stuff in Portugal, or I'm sure my local suppliers could ship to you. Ask if you want more details.

Be aware: whatever urethane you use is unlikely to have exactly the same degree of clearness / yellowness as the lacquer already on your neck. So you are going to have to do some sensible feathering and then buffing to blend the two. I'd be enclined either to do the whole of the back of the neck and headstock so as to avoid transition points, or create a gentle join where the neck meets the headstock, to hide it as much as possible.

If you need further pointers, give a shout.

Cheers - C
