How possible (not to be confused with 'practical') do you think it would it be for guitars with active electronics to power a small device for translating the electrical signal from the pickups into an optical signal (via 9V batteries or Lithium power packs)? I know fiber optic cable can be used to transmit a high-quality 5.1 surround sound signal over LONG distances with minimal loss or impedance. Given the increasing complexity and sampling rate of digital sound processors/pedals (such as Line 6's POD series), wouldn't it be wise to consider converting your signal to run through optical cables for such devices? (If not that, then simply because of the transmission qualities of fiber optic cable.

Here's an articles discussing some of the pros and cons of using fiber optic cable:

(I can only guess you would get THE purest, highest-quality, and lowest latency sound transmission possible this way. Besides the fact that you could easily send a multiphonic signal, not just a 3-voice harmonization, to your speakers; I wonder how that would work out. 0_o)

Plastic optic fiber is okay for short distances <30 feet, but the set ups for the amp, pedal, board, and the guitar are going to be pretty costly. I have never seen a Strat or a Bass set up for TOSLINK or a similar connection. POF (plastic optical fiber) loses ~ 1 dB/m at 650 nm. It would arguably make sense in a HQ recording studio.

The new epiphone LP ultra has a usb connection, which means it has a analog to digital electronics built in. Optical cable would also require a ADC electronics built into the guitar. We'll probably see more of this over time.

That's great, but don't worry, the future doesn't arrive until tomorrow.

even bends and kinks in pliable optic fiber causes a disruption. that's why the kinks and bends have a glow to them. the path of light travel is disrupted and with enough of them you lose almost all the intensity at the end. next time you are at a gift shop bend the fibers on the bushy lamp things and see, just dont get caught

Don't forget that the A/D and D/A converters at both ends will induce latency.

WOW - - see my post about antimatter pickups in the pickup area!
