A very surreal day. I remember leaving my apt in Brooklyn and looking up at the sky thinking "what an amazing day" and was looking forward to going to windows of the world later in the week since i lived there but just never got around to it. by the time i got off the L train in Manhattan it was pandemonium. No one knew what the hell was going on. Then the second plane hit. I remember watching them burn in disbelief from 14th street. Then they came down. The scene at union square was frightening as fellow citizens stopped running and were walking around like ghosts covered in dust and soot. The memorial they had a few months later that consisted of two beams of light reaching into the sky was very touching too. I wish they would have just kept that in place. A perfect reminder. Not sure how long they plan to keep it going now. God bless all the families affected in one way or another.

My office building stands on 6th Avenue, two blocks north of Canal Street, and roughly one mile north of what was to become known as Ground Zero. Our south facing windows were in direct line of sight of the Twin Towers. I was evaluating a patient at about 8;45 that morning when I heard the roar of engines pass directly over my head, that loud because the roof is just above and because, as we were to learn, those engines were running at takeoff power. I remarked to my assistant that this sounded like a really low-flying aircraft. Shortly afterward, I heard a muffled 'boom' but attributed it to vehicular traffic in that a Holland Tunnel approach runs along side us. Then came the sirens. I remarked, ironically, that perhaps, indeed, an aircraft had come down. I walked to one of the south facing windows and my gaze downward towards Canal Street caught the image of a fire truck speeding westbound crossing Sixth Avenue. I had not yet become aware of the gathering of people in the small plaza in front of the entrance all facing south and looking up. When I did, I followed their gaze, upon which, I picked up the phone on the counter immediately to my left, and contacted my wife.

To be continued......

Oh the sirens. That too was very surreal. Just jarred a memory I have of standing in the street and an ambulence came speeding down the street, came to an abrupt stop and waved a bunch of doctors in the the vehicle then sped off downtown. When i saw that it really hit home that things were not alright. I also volunteered for the Red Cross that week and because i was a local, had to sit in the passenger side of the ERV as they call it and help them navigate around the city. I was right there at Ground Zero a day or two after delivering food and water to the recovery teams. The memory of seeing that huge piece of WTC wall that is pictured in one of the 911 strats so up close in dim light of all the smoke and dust is burned into my brain forever.

I was in my truck, waiting to be loaded, at a plant in Jackson, TN, when I started hearing the first reports on the radio. There was a lot of confusion on the part of the newscasters and it was thought to be an accident and at first they thought that a "small private plane" had struck the North Tower. It wasn't too long before one of the "yard dog" trailer spotters drove up, parked his shuttle rig and hollered at me to come inside, if I wanted to, that something big was up in NYC.

I went into an employee break area with him, where they had a TV turned on and I got my first look at the news footage. When I saw the gaping hole in the side of that tower, I suspected immediately that this was no accident. I turned to the spotter next to me and told him, "that ain't no small private plane that did that kind of damage." I knew that it had to be a commercial-sized plane, to make a hole that big and what would a commercial aircraft, with an experienced pilot, be doing anywhere near those towers?? It didn't add up at all.

A few minutes later, I was still watching when the second plane flew directly and deliberately into the South Tower. At least four or five of the people watching, including myself, said "terrorists" at the same time. We were under attack and my mind immediately went back to the WTC bombing in 1993. I was thinking, 'those scumbags ain't gonna give up until they destroy those two buildings!' Even though I was totally stunned by what was happening, that was my first thought.

I left the plant with a load of appliances destined for a warehouse out on Long Island. I was between Jackson and Nashville when the news came over the radio that the towers had collapsed. Later, it was reported that no traffic was being allowed cross any of the bridges into NYC. I learned that we had four of my company's trucks stranded in that area, unable to get out. I ended up taking my load to a different warehouse in Pennsylvania.

That was a sad and scary day, because you didn't know for hours if and where they might hit us next.

......cont'd:

......Thus began our eyewitness to the scenario which has been played and replayed time and again over the past decade. During the first 15 minutes, speculation began to consolidate into hard information as colleagues coming up from the street were able to confirm that, indeed, it was a commercial aircraft which had hit the building, but the true nature of the event became solidified as we watched, from our vantage point, as the northeast corner of Tower Two exploded. In those first seconds, I had supposed that a bomb had been placed there but we were soon to learn that it was, indeed, due to another aircraft approaching from the south, which, from our line of sight, was unseen.
The rest of the horror show, in real time, needs no further edification. It's all been recorded for posterity, not only on my brain, but in the media. By 9:30, we were notified that our building was going to be shut down because the water was to be turned off and, within minutes I was out on the street and heading, on foot, to the east side and NYU Medical Center where I was expecting to be needed. As it turned out, the flood of mass casualties which they were preparing to receive never materialized.

My way towards the Medical Center took me out of visual site of the buildings such that I did not learn that the buildings had come down until I reached the office of my department chairman and came to view it on replay. Ironically, at that moment. I happened to be in the company of one Lisa Klinghoffer, daughter of Leon Klinghoffer, the man who was tossed overboard by the terrorists who seized the cruise ship Achille Lauro.

Transportation being down, and having nowhere to go, I remained at that location until late in the evening when the railroads resumed service, but the buses in Manhattan were haphazard at best. I found myself making my way across town through practically deserted streets at a day and time where hustle and bustle would have been the order of the day. Lower Manhattan was closed for a week and that fact kept me at home.

Captainc recalls his impressions of the site. A lasting memory of mine was the 'burnt rubber-like odor' which emanated from the site and filled the air in the region for months.
He might also have memory of the restaurant owner whose place of business was on Canal Street just west of Varick. He turned it into a resource for food and other kinds of support for those working at the site.

i was working in a warehouse here in arlington,tx when my favorite sales dude came in and told me a plane had hit the world trade center. i turned the radio station until i found one covering the breaking news. about that time the second plane hit and we knew this was more than a terrible accident.
that day and the days following i felt so many differnt' emotions. first was disbelief then anger then sadness. those emotions were kicked aside by a true sense of pride in my fellow americans in the way they handled the disaster. i wept several times and still do when i think of those who gave their lives to save others. the rescue workers were incredible.
i live acroos the road from DFW airport. at any given time i can see 10 or 12 planes in the air. the days after 9/11 were eerie. not a plane in sight. i remember it like it was yesterday.

I remember that smell vividly. I was temping at the Solomon Smith Barney building on Greenwich street at the time for extra loot while getting my audio career off the ground... when I'd venture out into the street those weeks and months after that smell just hit you.

I remember video of people jumping from the roof of the tower. At first I thought why are they jumping, why not wait for rescue. Then I realized they were moments away from burning from the heat. They decided to die on their own terms in their few remaining seconds. I will never forget a man and woman holding hands as they jumped. God bless them and their family.

thanks for the link, the artist is very good.
I didn't want to send my condolences on the day as I still feel strongly about the attacks. I was a bit worried about some one posting something disturbing but hopefully no one will. To all of those affected by the tragedy that day you are in my thoughts and prayers.
