I thought Change The World was a nice song (until FM radio drilled it into the ground)

Out of the choices given, I'd have to go with Lay Down Sally. Did you ever notice the chords don't change at the guitar solo? Very hard to keep it sounding interesting without some chord changes, it's a killer solo with that in mind.

There are loads to choose from - right now I'm excited about the old ''Strange Brew'' ! But I often return to the simplicity of Cryin' from the Blues album  The Poll is too small !

I considered Strange Brew, but it's technically a Cream song.

None. Eric's a guitar player he can't write songs. The odd thing he does write like Tears In Heaven are usually pretty tuneless. He's never written a good tune since being a solo artist. Look at his albums; cover versions everywhere. Tells you all you need to know.

He was good in the Domino's and Cream but even then he was no songwriter; he even admits it himself he's hopeless at writing songs.

I never considered what he has written or not - just his performance . That's OK for me - he is an artist that can make a song his own . I really dig ''Beware Of Darkness'' (Harrison) from the concert for George 8) Cheers

Oh yeah he's put in some great interpretations of other folks songs, no doubt about that.

His versions of JJ Cale's songs are great. I like Tulsa Time, Cocaine and there are quite a few more.

I just always think of Eric more as a guitar player than a songwriter really.

Got to be "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad" from Derek & The Dominos...even if you did leave it off the list!

Im going to break all the original posters rules..My all time fav Clapton song is River of Tears I personally think its his most mature refined playing of all time but it is honestly just my opinion..Like this next shocking statement..Dont get me wrong I like Layla but I personally always felt the solo left me wanting more..there I said it..now Im going to run and hide!!
I also realize you said no Cream songs but Crossroads love!

This is tough for me to choose because I am a huge fan of EC's music and have been ever since I was a kid back in the 60s. Believe it or not my favourite is actually "Running On Faith". "Layla" in both versions is absolutely classic. Plus, even though he did not write "Crossroads" his version with Cream has to be considered a rock milestone. It has probably inspired more people to pick up a guitar and play in a blues/rock style than any other song.

Eric hated Jimi, but he gives him props.

I have 2 favourite Clapton songs: "Promises" and "Mainline Florida".There are other great ones but for some reason these songs just strike me the right way.

Hi Hou-Tex,I don't know where you got the info that Eric hated Jimi as nothing could be further from the truth.Jimi and Eric spent a lot of time iin each other's company, not only because they were claimed to be the best guitarists in the world, but because they were on the same intellectual level and shared many common interests. At Jimi's last indoor British concert Eric brought along a lefty Strat to give Jimi but Jimi didn't know that Eric was near the place and left the venue right after his set.Eric just figured that he'd give it to Jimi the next time that he saw him, sadly the next time that he saw him was at his wake.Eric was in bits after Jimi died as both he and Eric Burden were Jimi's best friends.

E.C. has said in interviews many times that he loved Jimi dearly and very shortly after Jimi's death He,Steve Winwood,Rick Grech et al. did a long and almost mournful version of Little Wing at the Fillmore West.
