In my opinion the problem is the the us governments interpretation of the Indian law. at what point is the wood considered finished? technically a fingerboard blank is a finished product, it is just a fingerboard and it is worked to a point that the Indian government is satisfied. in my opinion once the fingerboard leaves India being sold as a " Finger board" it is free to be modified to its intended use. if they were selling incomplete guitars i could see that being a a problem because the guitar is not "finished" in India. think of the fingerboard as a block of restricted Indian clay. once India sells said block of clay legally as a block of clay the consumer should be able to shape it how they pleas.

also I am sure the Justice Department could have handled it better

but just my thaughts

Its an International Agreement, not Indian Law :) It's called the Lacey Agreement. India, and The USA not to mention other countries are part of it.

it was my understanding that the lacey act is there to enforce the laws. but it is Indian law that determines to what extent the product is "finished" before export?

I am still researching it, but so far reading all the boring legal text that's what i get out of it. but I am an engineer so its not my area of expertise. the law is not a easy to understand as a schematic:lol:

Serious question for the many here who are in the business of wood in one way or another (lutheirs, techs, buy and sell wood, etc):

Does anyone know the relative use of wood (compare them) between these three industries:

1. guitars
2. paper
3. baseball bats.

Serious question. In my line of work, and office work in general all over the industrialized world, we waste paper like you could not imagine. When I first got out of school, I was shocked by it, but now I'm numb like everyone else.

they make rosewood and ebony paper? :P Jk

Well good point but I'm talking about "how close we are to running out or having a shortage" of whatever the relevant type of wood is.

I was just giving you a hard time.

honestly I wouldn't know how to start. I am having enough trouble deciphering all the laws related to the Gibson incident  but I can say that the wood the paper industry uses is not the same wood that the guitar industry does. so its hard to compare. my company only buys recycled paper and i am sure it is the same with allot of company's now.

GUITARS: ceder/ash/alder/oak/rose wood/and other suitable High quality woods. The softer woods for tonal quality and aesthetics. the harder woods for structural integrity as well as aesthetics. All of the highest quality/beauty. Clear or translucent finishes, you cant hide behind.= expensive. You can paint over anything.
PAPER: Fast growing replaceable trees. cottonwood/alder/hem/fir/small trees, unsuitable for anything but pulp wood, in other words. A lot of scrap.
BASEBALL BATS: Hickory of course, because of its hardwood quality, grain and resilience.

just got an e-mail from guitar center.

go to the store, play a gibson or an epi, and get a chance to take a trip to gibson in nashville.

that is, assuming they'll still be open. talk about bad timing

Clearly Gibson is again being targeted for no reason as the Indian Government issued all of the necessary paperwork along with the wood in question to Gibson, for a second time no actual charges of merit have been filed. The letter written by the Gibson CEO to the powers that be in Washington DC still has not been answered. I don't think it will be, ever. To say that I'm worried about what is going on right here in the land of my home is an understatement of the highest order. In my entire life I have not felt so helpless and embarrassed as I have for the past 3 years. I'm old so don't care so much for myself, but, for our young people I worry because if it can happen to a musical instrument company with a grand history and record how can we stop it from happening to others here. Have to end this post with the wish, may God help American private businesses because the godless are bent on destroying them. IMHO YMMV

How can you say such a thing......?

Didn't you hear the pharoah's speech last week? He wants to put all Americans back to work.

Except those "shovel-ready" jobs he's fond of mentioning are actually at the cemetary......burying all American commerce!

Uh oh, we went from fair open discussion to political debate. That's my cue.
