I currently live in the Northeast and recently received a job offer from Texas... Can anyone give me some pros and cons? And, I know all about the heat :)

Thanks

I'm also from the NE (originally Staten Island, to be exact).

My experiences from being stationed in Texas in the Army are (in no particular order):

The great folks of Texas are most intelligent, hospitable, polite and friendly. They are truly down to earth and really do make you feel at home. They also have a very high sense of justice and traditional American values.

If you have a 'profound' NYC accent like I do, it would behoove you to lose it.

The steaks and burgers at their restaurants are the best I've ever had in the country.

They have many beautiful women; love their accent!

No one is below 5'10" tall.

Most of the music in the clubs I went to were outstanding, just like the clubs.

Speaking for both of us, one can get homesick easily because all in all, there is a significant bit of a culture shock.

FWIW, my father always used to say, "You have to go where the money is." So, if that's where your money is...

Good luck either way!!

+1

Move to a city that has a "Great American Land And Cattle Company" steak house. I'm not sure how far east their franchises extend but they have two of them in El Paso plus another in Anthony.

Best burgers on the goddamm planet......and that ain't no bull!

As a native Texan, I can let you in on some things that many people from the northeast don't understand:

Most of us don't care how you did it in _____________ (where ever back home is). It may have worked very well there, and it may even work well here, but our traditions are very important and if you like how you did it back home, then go back there.

Start liking high school football. Now.

Bar-b-q, Mexican Food and Chicken-Fried Steak are three of the major food groups. Outside of the major metropolitan areas, sushi and tofu are not acceptable.

If you don't already, learn to like Iced Tea.

Most people will call a soda pop a "Coke," even if it isn't a Coca-Cola. Dr. Pepper is one exception to that phenomenon.

Try a Big Red soda. You probably won't like it, but it's one of those "touchstone" tastes that you can use to describe other things. It tastes like liquified bubble gum. Don't get the large one, just a 12 ounce...trust me.

"A little ways up the road" can mean 2 miles or 200 miles.

There's a reason there's so many songs about driving across Texas. There is little or no mass transit.

Do not move to El Paso. There is no good reason to live there.

If a woman calls you "Honey" that does not necessarily mean she is flirting with you. She would probably also call the ugliest man alive "Honey".

A good dog is worth as much as a good wife.

Gruene Hall is sacred. Don't insult the fact that it looks it is about to fall down and has no air conditioning.

Every Dairy Queen makes their menu items a little bit different. If you don't like one DQ's burger, try another location.

Take your hat off when you go inside the Alamo.

The Mexican food on the Riverwalk sucks. When in San Antonio, go to El Mercado and go to La Margarita in you want good Mexican food.

Do not stare at a Mexican girl in front of her boyfriend/husband/older brother/father/uncle, or any combination thereof. You will get into a fight, and you will not win. Remember how outnumbered they were at the Alamo?

Don't touch another man's cowboy hat without permission. Don't stare when a man is in a business suit while wearing boots and a cowboy hat.

Y'all is plural for "You" (a Yankee version is "Youse Guys"), but that grammar rule is a bit slushy and "y'all" can be used for a singular individual as well.

If you don't already wear cowboy boots, and when you try some on, if they hurt your feet, ask for something that doesn't have a "shank" in it (ask for a roper-style boot, they have no shank). A shank feels like a 1/4" half-round wooden dowel rod has been placed between your heel and your arch support. Ropers are a little less fashionable right now, but people who grew up wearing loafers or tennis shoes can wear roper-style boots without pain. (PS--I grew up wearing boots, and I still can't wear a pair that have a shank in them--it hurts my feet...).

Don't wear a felt hat in summer or a straw hat in winter.

Do not go snipe hunting. They are trying to play a practical joke on you.

Yes, cow tipping is possible, but if you don't know the difference between a cow and a bull, don't try it. The bull will hurt or seriously kill you...and unless you are Ussein Bolt, you cannot outrun him.

You can root for either the Longhorns or the Aggies, but not both. Likewise with the Cowboys and the Texans.

Do not take Tom Landry's name in vain.

Farting can be a competitive sport, but not in mixed company.

Maybe I missed it, but it would help if you clarified where in Texas. Texas is huge and diverse in almost every aspect. I moved to the Houston area three years ago after growing up in North Louisiana, but I travel all over the state. Trust me, it is a country in an to itself.

Only in Texas.

There is one good thing (that I know of) that comes out of El Paso but he doesn't live there anymore.

You guys are the best!!! That's why I asked here, I knew "Youse Guys" wouldn't let me down :)

Sorry, I thought I mentioned it... The company was just west of Fort Worth. But unfortunately I had to decline. One of my daughters suffers from migraines and she thinks they would be worse with the heat.

That's some funny stuff y'all...and I'll add one more that as a Tennessean I am duty bound to say,"If it wasn't for Tennessee, there wouldn't be a Texas."
I don't truly hold to that fact,...but I have to say it,my Bros. in Texas understand and love us for it,even though they think we're full of it for saying it.

You're right--I didn't realize when I wrote that! :?

The hat removal at the Alamo is to respect the fallen revolutionaries...
