Mine was missing. I called my vendor (guitar center) and they apologized and sent off a dozen at no charge (cause they're sold by the dozen). I don't know if it's standard practice not to ship with them for MIM, but mine didn't have it and I complained. Any fender dealer should sell you one for maybe 50 cents. Or mailorder a dozen.

This here I guess?

Yep, available from any number of sources.

Fender, stop shipping guitars that need them without these. It just pisses people off. Why would you want to do that? Does this forum get back to Fender execs who can actually make decisions?

Yeah it's a little odd. It's not like a silly spring would cost them any notable amount of money. If I hadn't been in this forum, I would have kept thinking that this is just how the Jaguar trem works.

I use teflon tape right now, works alright but I might still buy the spring at some point.

I know Kurt Cobain didn't use the trem so that could be why it isn't really set up for the tremolo. Of course it is probably just a mistake by Fender and no real thought went in to it.

Probably the latter, because otherwise they didn't have to include the trem arm either

I love this guitar! But I think I will be saving my money to build a Jagstang bass with some of the Ferrington guitars (Kurts first custom guitar made by Danny Ferrington) elements mixed in it. I seen it posted on a site a few years back and thought it was a great idea. So now I am planning on building one! Oh and this is my first post in probably 6 months.

Finally got my KC Jag! Awesome guitar! I have to say they did a very good job on the finish, there is even rust on the screws and pickup pole pieces. It looks really authentic. It plays beautifully as well, the pickups sound fantastic, and the super distortion has a much clearer tone than I was expecting, and the PAF is very warm sounding and has a very vintage vibe and sound to it. There are actually alot of tonal options too, with the Lead/Rythym switch. The rythym circuit has an even warmer vintage sound to it. The guitar also has very good sustain, which I wasn't expecting, with the vintage bridge setup, but this could have to do with the high gain SD pickup. the only gripe I have is that it is very hard to do a gradual volume roll-off or swell because the three knobs are very close together and the bridge pickup volume is the middle knob. Other than that I would definitely recommend this guitar to fans and to anyone looking for a great vintage sounding and feeling guitar with great usable tone.

I love Kurt Cobain. I am collecting information to write an essay on Kurt Cobain. I got many information from here as well. Thank you for the information.

Could the gentleman that actually OWN this guitar comment on the weight? I'm thinking about buying one for myself but I was a little put off that these babies are heavy around 8.6-8.9 pounds... THOUGHTS?
Thank you all!
M.

Yes they are heavy. But no more so than a regular jag. I actually found it a little lighter than the classic player Jag, due to the KC jag having a thin nitro finish, instead of the CP's thicker polyester finish. The KC comes in between 7-8 pounds.

Another strange thing I noticed is that the G string goes out of tune after using the tremolo when all the other strings don't. I can't quite find an explanation for this. If the tremolo wouldn't reset properly, then all strings should be out of tune.

I've had one of these Jags for a few weeks now and although I don't use the trem I did notice that the G string was a pain to tune compared to the rest of the strings. I thought at first that the nut was binding but after checking that it was fine. It then crossed my mind that it could be the string tree so I removed it and the problem was gone.

I'm really not sure what possessed Fender to put that extra string tree on this guitar, it's not on any classic Jaguars and certainly wasn't on Cobains Jag so why add it here? The only thing I can think of is that the neck they found that was closest to the strange one on Cobains guitar is from a strat with the two string tree holes pre drilled. Anyway I just have the one on mine now and it plays great. Shame about that extra hole though!

One other thing to look out for is the initial setup of the guitar. The intonation on mine was way off, in fact the bridge saddles were so far forward that the strings were initially touching the back of the main bridge assembly and after a few days the strings had worn groves into the bridge. Once intonated correctly the saddles are set further back so that the strings move away from the rear edge of the bridge.

The last weirdness I've found, and I'm not sure if this also applied to normal Jaguars is that the top E string touches the screw head in the trem plate causing some buzzing. I changed my strings to 10-52 Fender Bullets which helped a bit because the bullets don't have the additional wrapping but the low E still hits.

I'm still really pleased to own this guitar, it's just a shame that Fender seem to have copped out on a few small things that could have made it that little bit closer to the guitar it's based upon.

Paul

Virtuoso is nothing if the artist has nothing to say with their music in my opinion. With any form of artistic expression, there are people out there who focus solely on the "art"- the technical aspects (a particlular shade of brown, the sharpness of a lens, how fast you can play notes) and totally lose sight of the expression... by focusing on how they are communicating, they forget what they are communicating. Kurt was in my opinion the total opposite of this. Some might say that he was too against technical mastery, others say he achieved a good balance in his music (and also his other art).

well said. people dont seem to understand that he was there for the art, not the technical side

VERY GOOD POINTS!! - Mr. Cobain was a wonderful inspiration to players who don't know the "circle of 5ths", and couldn't care less. Watch that Nirvana video where they're dressed in 50's outfits, with the clips of screaming 50's girls. His guitar lead is VERY inventive. Was he a virtuoso? Of course not. The point is....it doesn't really matter. Mr. Satriani is the ultimate guitar virtuoso, but I wouldn't listen to his music if you paid me.

THE REVIEW - I would like to qualify my assessment without sounding like an f*ing know-it-all. I've played over 25 years, and have owned the best - from a '52 Les Paul Goldtop and a '64 SG Standard, to vintage Rickys, Dan Armstrongs, and yes...even the elusive Fender Musiclander. I've heard 'em all, and I'm willing to say the Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar is one of the best sounding, if not THE best sounding guitar I've ever played. It has a certain musicality to it. This may be due to the shorter scale - I've heard it described as a "rubber-band" effect. I often use minimal distortion, and the DiMarzios have a completely unexpected sweet tone. It sounds like a Les Paul, but has the additional color and brightness like a Fender. (Like Fender humbuckers, but much better!!) The frets are rough (no biggie), and I had to adjust the truss rod. THE FINISH: When I first saw this guitar at GC, I told the kid playing it that someone ruined a perfectly good Jaguar, but it was still cool. I didn't even know it was a relic. The thin nitro lacquer (YES, the body is lacquer, but the neck is thin poly.) and relicing are SUPERB, IMO. You can argue all day about relicing pros and cons, but this guitar HAD to be reliced, because it was likely beat up when he got it. He never played it any other way. What's missing also, in the discussion, is the aesthetic appeal of an aged guitar. It's a warm and fuzzy feeling, seeing your guitar look like they did back when you first drooled over them. For the youngsters out there, they didn't have finishes back in the 60's that looked like the body was dipped in a vat of syrup. And, YES, you fellows out there who can't handle the weight of a MAN'S guitar like a Jaguar, and had to resort to buying one of those toy Mustangs. The only thing they're missing is the wind-up crank that makes the music. "She loves you,....YEAH, YEAH, YEAH..."
