Actually this kind of thing is a big part of why he killed himself.

Why would he kill himself if he wanted his Jag to be his signature guitar?

I agree with you, I used Satriani as an example of a good 'technical' player.

Kurt's songs were simple but had power behind them. He had the most amazing voice too. Listen to Aneurysm. It's simple as hell. I played it within my first week of learning guitar. But there is no song that sticks in my mind like that one (live especially)

Kurt was all about making simple yet powerful music.

And if you think what he did was so easy...try making a song with a couple of power chords as energetic as Lithium.

I don't mean to sound like such a fanboy, but I think it's a shame when people automatically assume more is better.

You know, I've always maintained this. Sure, you can play 164th note triplets at 250 B.P.M. but can you write a song? Can you come up with something other than wanking on the guitar to try and compensate because of your ego? Music shouldn't be about some pissing contest. I never understood this mentality, but then again, I'm just a bass player who happens to play some guitar to add to this thing called a song. I think Kurt understood this. He wasn't technically the most proficient guitarist, but he knew how to write a song. You can't deny this, or otherwise we wouldn't be discussing him 20 years later.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with tasty lead playing, either. I love to listen to bands like Led Zeppelin or Rush, but they usually have some decent songs to go along with that.

Aneurysm is probably my favorite Nirvana song. It gets stuck in my head the most. I love the rawness of it. Especially, when his vocals are almost blown sounding. It's great drinking music to me. That's when I usually listen to it. Three sheets to the wind. Heh

Exactly.

After all, who cares how well you can play if you can't write a song to go with it? Especially if you look at some of the lesser known songs...Old Age, Sappy, Pen Cap Chew etc...His songwriting skills are evident.

Kurt couldn't stand the fame. He wanted people to like his music but he couldn't stand being the centre of attention.

He hated the fame and had a passionate hatred for this kind of hero-worship/fanboy s***.

Defining the guitar performance spectrum between the polarities of Cobain and Satriani is kind of like defining the spectrum of film between Ishtar and Porky's. There are superior iconic choices for reference.

Frankly, nobody ever made a big deal about what guitars singer-songwriters strummed to back themselves up: not Dylan, not Elvis, not Joanie Mitchell, not Lou Reed. Just chords, just strums, just backing stuff.

The song's the thing, the voice is the thing, the look is the thing. All of Cobain's juice was in his songs and his vocal delivery, and his look, body language. The guitar could have been any off the shelf beginner's guitar through a distortion pedal. His uniqueness and distinction as an artist lay elsewhere.

The trem arm is a screw in. Personally I like a trem arm that stays in place whereever I leave it and doesn't hang lose. The problem here is that it either hangs lose or, when fully screwed in, it pretty much just stays in one place and doesn't move at all. So this seems different than the Strat one which moves less and less the more you screw it in. Gonna have to work something out here.

You're missing the spring that goes in the hole where the arm screws in.\

This tremolo lock button I have been unable to use so far. It won't move at all.

Can you pull back up on the tremolo? If not, then the thing is probably screwed down tight like mine was. Loosen the adjustment screw until you can just slide the lock button back and forth with the trem bar in neutral position. Then you can lock it when desired and unlock it when you want trem both above and below pitch. See the trem setup instructions at http://www.webrocker.de/jaguar/cms/2007 ... lo-system/

Oh? Never noticed a spring on the Strat. Gonna look into it.

It's a brand new guitar though, shouldn't that spring be included?

Even MORE where it's at. John McLaughlin with Miles' "rock band" playing his Musicmaster 2. Now THAT would have made sense for Fender to reissue. A guitar played by a guy who could actually play guitar. What a concept.

And it would sell about 20 copies.

Uhh...Mustangs and Musicmasters are some of the hottest vintage guitars on the market, and Fender is selling their Mustang reissues by the boatload. 20 copies??? You forgot a few zeroes.

A John McLaughlin signature model would sell about 20 copies. Nobody knows who he is. I don't even know who he is. Everyone knows who Cobain is.

Mexican made guitars don't come with the spring, so I hear

Mine was missing. I called my vendor (guitar center) and they apologized and sent off a dozen at no charge (cause they're sold by the dozen). I don't know if it's standard practice not to ship with them for MIM, but mine didn't have it and I complained. Any fender dealer should sell you one for maybe 50 cents. Or mailorder a dozen.
