Heya guys! I just bought a guitar recently and to protect it from dust and bumps I make it a habit to store it on it's hard case than hanging it on a guitar stand. But I've been wondering if positions will affect the guitar in the long run so I've been thinking if I can get 2nd opinions from you guys who already owned a guitar for ages.

1.) How about DIAGONAL position in between a wall or a table just like in my room. Though I think it might flatten the edges which is bad for the hard case...

Image

2.) Now I'm laying my guitar SIDEWAYS just like in a playing position and has a fine weight distribution for the guitar, do you think it's the safest?

Image

My hardcase has legs on its sides to keep it from being bumped down and I think this position is best if you don't want your guitar from falls though it occupies wider space.

Image

3.) Or how about laying it FLAT ON THE FLOOR under your bed? It saves a lot of space though I think it will take a lot of effort to take it out of it's case.

Image

My hardcase has also 3 legs beneath it to prevent from scratching the surface when you slide it out from the bed.

Image

4.) And lastly how about on a STANDING POSITION where it's easiest to pick up and saves space to consider the arrangement in my room and looks presentable in that way.

Image

My hard case has 4 legs to support it on this position although the risk for bumping and falling is higher if placed in other places.

Image

Also I'm worried that the guitar strap button might be buried deeper if left on this position for a long time since the weight of guitar will all go in that part by law of gravity.

Image

Though my hard case is designed to have that guitar strap button it still make me worry because the lining of the case is a soft cotton like material and it might be pushed down and centering the weight of the guitar to the guitar strap button.

So guys in your own opinion what's the best storage position for it? I don't really want to compromise the wellness of my guitar even though I take it and play with it once in a while. And if you have your own way of positioning it better I hope you can share it here. Many thanks in advance!!

I own 40 guitars....so naturally I cannot store all of them on stands or on the walls! I have the nicer ones in cases laying flat, under beds and such. Others are in cases and leaned up in corners like you have already tried. I have stored guitars in every position imaginable for over 15 years, and have never found any single position to be detrimental to the guitar in any way (although top down may be bad LOL). The only thing that will ever really harm your guitar in or out of the case will be fall damage, and temperature and humidity changes. Keep the guitar in a room that stays about 70 degrees F, and somewhere around 40%-50% humidity and your axe's setup will remain consistent and the guitar will last much longer than you ;)

Many thanks Steve-oh-no, but I just want to clarify. If I store my guitar vertically standing as long as it's in a hard case, nothing bad will happen to it? How about if theres a strap button beneath it? Won't it be pushed over by the guitar's weight and create a crack? And to tell that the cushion on the sides of the hard case is very soft so I think it can't support the bottom of the guitar that much if left for a few months or years.

Thanks for the tip about humidifiers but do you think I will still need it if I'm living in a tropical country? (We only have 2 seasons: sunny and rainy [Philippines])

Oh I'm kinda interested on what kind of damage it can make if placed in top down position even though if it's inside a hard case. :P Can you elaborate? hehe thanks!

Store any-which way! Trust the manufacturer and case!
Under the bed, you wont practice as much!
Happy trails!

As far as I have ever heard, storing a guitar in its case, and standing (or even a slight lean as in the first photo) is the recommended method. Storing in that manner relieves any stress that may be put on the neck of the guitar. However, I have never had an issue with a guitar that was caused by how I stored it, and back when I was a teenager I would put my guitar (in its case) anywhere in my room I had space for it.

I have nothing to add to the topic, I am just going to compliment you on how clean your room is (I am assuming that you are a teenager, if not sorry  ). Good job. :D 8)

Hey!! noticed that you have a Gdec sitting there. What do you think of it? I have had one for about 2 years now. Great for teaching students improv. I also use it to help write parts from time to time. Only problem is that the buttons have worn out on the thing. I was thinking about sending it to Fender but god only knows what it would cost to fix it. I love that little amp.

As far as storing guitars in the case...hmm....I don't even have an answer to that. Common sense maybe?

Welcome Kat either upright or on its side, is the best or safest. (a short horror story) Once upon a time I had a '69 Gibson Hummingbird and a housemate that loved to drink way beyond her capacity to walk in a straight line. One night we had friends over for the usual Kitchen jam session and I put my guitar in its case laying down...add one wobbly friend and I no longer had a functional Hummingbird...she killed it

Positions #1 and 4 in your photos are the preferred manner of storage. Under the bed is too impractical and laying them flat, they're subject to being tripped over and you must insure that nothing heavy is stacked on top of them. Storing them standing up absolutely will not affect the endpin in the guitar at all. That is a needless fear.

Good rule that has served me well and will continue to do so: "Never leave your guitar anywhere you would not be comfortable." That is the most important thing about storage. Not so much the position of the case.

Thanks for the welcome cherokee747 and dharma47. And whow, nice collection CRGuitarMan! And thanks to all of you guys! At least I'm now confident storing my guitar in a standing position and that greatly lessen my anxiety. I'm glad that I posted it in this community. I'm now satisfied! Thanks again and more power!
