I have new MIM strat. The salesman at Guitar Center talked me into a Crate RFX 30 amp saying it was a great amp for a strat. It was on sale for $159. Anyone have any experience or an opinion about crane amps?

there is no "greatest amp".... there are much better than others, but any amp will be fine, and i doubt a 160 dollar amp will be the best possible amp to play a strat too, either that or someone hasn't told numerous live performers throughout the ages

Is it a crate amp? I think thats what you meant. Crate has been making amps since the 70s. Not the greatest amps in the world, but that amp should last you a good while.

I've never played through that amp but I googled it and saw that it has some digital effects, a 10" spkr and is solid state.

If you like it, that's fine, but I would prefer to find a used tube amp than a solid state amp. That's just my opinion though.

Ask if they have a Crate Palomino V8 in stock and try it out. It's a 5 watt class A tube amp that's affordable and sounds awesome. I think you can get them for under $200.

I probably should have done more research before buying this crate. I went in intending to get a Fender Frontman 25 but they did not have one and so I was talked into this one. Since I am not much past a beginner in terms of my playing and since I have never owned an electric before this MIM standard strat, I am at the mercy of salesman and shopping in the dark. I have a lot to learn. What is the difference between a solid state and tube amp?

Depends on which Crate, but just like anything else, go out and try it for yourself.

well if you're not much past a beginner.... a solid state amp will suit you fine..... the amp you have is fine for you if you like the sound of it..... a tube amp is powered by tubes and give you a warm sound..... and if you crank it up you get this nice overdriven breakup sound

I have a Crate bass amp that I use for practice. It's actually doubling as a night stand, much to the dismay of my wife. :)

I also have a Crate guitar amp that my son is using.

Both are decent pieces of equipment for what I would call light use.

I had a Crate 40 watt twin speaker. I think I bought it in...1987 or '88? That was my amp at home for 10 years and I had absolutely no problems with it whatsoever. (I think at one point it had even fallen off the back of a truck and was still playable.)

Did it have the greatest sound ever? No...but it was reliable. Very reliable.

There's value in that which shouldn't be underappreciated. I'd rather have an amp that had an "OK" sound that was bulletproof vs. a great sounding amp I had to get serviced every month. (I've been in both boats...)

Not that it's important, but I don't think I've ever plugged into a Crate once in my life.
