It might not hurt to look into some Squiers. Very nice guitars, and for $500, you can get 2 of them!

the closest GC to me is about 1.5 hours away, so i don't go to often, but i do have a local music store which sells fenders... they usually match GC's prices, and are nice people who will talk with you and let you play everything unlike some stores "if you aren't serious about buying it, don't play it"

they generally are reasonable about giving me deals if i give them a good enough offer
do u live in south central pa?

As far as the Standard Series Strat vs. The AS Strat:

My drummer has a Standard Strat ('05) and our rhythm guitarist has an AS Strat ('04). Both guitars are great, though I did need to tighten up the jack plate on the Standard and set it up when our drummer got it.

As far as performance the AS Strat seems to have a bit more sustain, and a little bit better clean tone, that could be a factor depending on what you play. The pups on both sound great, though they definitely have different voices. To be fair the Standard does dirt ALOT better.

Where playability is concerned, from my point of view atleast, I like the Standard better. I like the neck more (a bit chunkier) and the guitar is a little bit heavier, which I like being a bass player. Our rhythm guitar's AS is deceptively light.

Either way, I don't think you can go wrong really. For just starting out I don't think there's anything wrong with a Standard model. It's a pretty good place to start and they are easily upgradable.

For another option, about a month ago in a shop I played a Classic 50's Strat and was absolutely floored. For the price, much like the basses, I'd say it's the best bang for your buck out there. The guitar was a definite player, and had a tone that was to die for. I really liked the old school neck profile and radius, though that may not be for everyone.

The best Fender guitar under $500 is a "blem" Jimmy Vaughn Stratocaster from Musician's Friend.

Most "blemished" items they sell are guitars that have simply been returned and have no defect. You can get a JV Strat right now for 497 bucks. A great soft-v neck, medium jumbo frets, alder body, good pickups, and a nice two-tone burst. Plus the deluxe gig bag.

Even if it does have a nick in it, so what? You're going to put one on it pretty soon anyway.

What are you hanging around here for? Go. Buy it now.

i think i might go with your idea
fender 65' mustang $500
60's strat $500
Deluxe Powerhouse Stratocaster $450
70's strat $500
Gibson (not epiphone) vintage faded sg around $500

ill just test out at a local music wich i like then order a guitar from them.

I know the sub-$500 Squires are all 42mm nut widths (unplayable for me), but are all the MIM Strats also 42mm nut widths as well? I know the MIM Roland-Ready is which was a huge disappointment for me as it makes it impossible for me to play clean, critical in midi performance.

I've never been able to understand why if Fender determined all their American Strats to be the optimum size for the human hand/fingers at a 43mm nut width, who are they making the cheaper lines for...little greys???

Maybe that would make a good marketing tack for Fender: "Tiny guitars for tiny budgets. You shrink the payment, we shrink the neck!"

In a thread in the Stratocaster section, I posted the Strat nut sizes for all of the Strats from Fender, the Fender Custom Shop and Squier. These were all determined by reading the spec sheets from the Fender and Squier sites.

You know it's funny how few players are even aware of nut width, yet it makes such a critical difference. Reading through HC reviews of the MIM Powerhouse, it's all comments like "I love this guitar" "it's so comfortable!" "Feels right in my hands" "great to play!". I wonder how many of them realize they've been playing 42mm MIMs right before they picked up their 43mm MIM Powerhouse and it felt much better?

Must be some reason most American (read: expensive/top-of-the-line) modern-style Strats are 43mm!

There is a Sam Ash exclusive called the 48th Street Custom. It's a Mexican Strat with single coil Tex-Mex pickups in the neck and body positions, and a Tex-Mex humbucker in the brige position. It has great tone! I bought one myself. I was a little leary about buying a Mexican made guitar, but I'm really glad that I did.

The Sam Ash web site states that it has a poplar body, however, it has a sticker on it from Fender that says it's an alder body. It has a maple neck, with an Indian rosewood fret board. It comes in a satin finished candy apple red, with a white pearloid pick guard. Great sounding, great looking guitar for $469.00.

hey here's an idea: on musician's friend they have a clearance seciton of "blemished" items and you can get guitars that have just a few minor scratches or imperfections (nothing wrong with the sound or playibility) for like 200 to 300 dollars cheaper than gc list. i'm thinking about buying one of them myself.
