the closest GC to me is about 1.5 hours away, so i don't go to often, but i do have a local music store which sells fenders... they usually match GC's prices, and are nice people who will talk with you and let you play everything unlike some stores "if you aren't serious about buying it, don't play it"

they generally are reasonable about giving me deals if i give them a good enough offer

My local mom and pop gets plenty of my business. They just can't touch the buying power of the big guys. But if they can get within 10 percent of what I can wheel and deal then they get my business. All my used purchases, low margin buys are always at the mom and pop!

I just beat up my local GC manager and got an RGX A2 for $321. On Fenders it does really all depend on what's on sale and what they want to move. They just had the H1s on sale for $599 on the 4th.

Aren't Mexican strats a 42mm nut while the Americans are 43mm? To me that's a huge difference in playability. Anyways, in the olden days the cheap line was made in Japan, and guys as celebrated as Duke Robillard would tour with them. He said they had more brilliance and twang than the Americans, and I'd have to agree. Plus if they got stolen or busted no biggie.

No second-class citizens these Mexican strats! But they do come set up pretty crazily. Make sure your dealer spends some time with them straightening the neck and getting the action lowered before you take possession.

I have always found when trying to knock down prices is to show you have the biggest balls and dont back down.

Normally the threat of going else where does the trick, saying you can get it much cheaper off the internet works well.

There's always this...the Dapne Blue will put you under 500, looks amazing, and that's a good amount of guitar for the price.

^ that is a scratch and blem though.... from what i've heard, its not a big deal though, most people get them with only very minor cosmetic defects with no real playability issues... looks like a good guitar though

Just a few thoughts .... Personally, I think more important than WHICH guitar is having a guitar that is properly set up with respect to string guage for your situation, and the appropriate factory recommended tremolo-neck-pickup adjustments. What it SOUNDS like is much, much more important than what it LOOKS like. Learning to set up a guitar is so simple even bass players can do it, lol.

Dollar-for-dollar, a less expensive used instrument is better if you take the saved outlay and invest in some online, computer-based, or in-person lessons. Above all else, practice is FREE and the more time you spend at it, the more money you will save chasing musical success with fancier gear.

With a little patience and the advice of a mentor, a decent used, made-in-Mexico Fender can be had for less than half your $500 figure, for instance, through eBay or your local guitar shop. That should serve you well until your first CD goes platinum, or you make the finals on America's Got Talent, anyway.

just play a bunch of mexican strats in your price range... one should probably feel like the guitar for you if you play enough... if you feel good playing it, get it, but most of the mexican strats are quality guitars

I have two MIM strats and they both play great. I love them both. My Guitar Center always has a great selection of used guitars well under 500. Like everyone else says. Play every strat in your price range. You will find one that feels good.
