You can't go wrong with either a MIM Strat or a Highway 1 Strat.

<$500...
Mex Std Strat all the way.
now with gig bag and perfect for modding later on down the road.

Keep in mind, all MIM Strats are retrofittable with Fender Accessories (i.e. pickguards, pick ups, knobs, etc.)

I would suggest a Deluxe Players Strat. A Mexican with American pups. Normally about 600 bucks. Take your dough to GC and play until you find one with mojo. Then tell the salesman you got 500 cash out the door. If he balks tell him to get his manager. Tell the manager you really want that guitar and all you have is 500 bucks and you can get one from Joes across town for that amount. If he doesn't move go to his competition and get a Mexican Standard. Gotta play hardball with the big boys.

The Manager's at my local GC would just laugh you out the door.

Personally I was in your position a while ago. I played my Squier to within an inch of its life, waited till I had some cash, and stretched for a Voodoo Strat. I don't regret it the least bit, but if you're desperate for a new guitar this instant, I'm sure a mexi will suit your needs just fine. Follow chris63's advice and it should get you somewhere.

The best Fender guitar under $500 is a "blem" Jimmy Vaughn Stratocaster from Musician's Friend.

Most "blemished" items they sell are guitars that have simply been returned and have no defect. You can get a JV Strat right now for 497 bucks. A great soft-v neck, medium jumbo frets, alder body, good pickups, and a nice two-tone burst. Plus the deluxe gig bag.

Even if it does have a nick in it, so what? You're going to put one on it pretty soon anyway.

What are you hanging around here for? Go. Buy it now.

I am glad that my manager is not your manager!

I get stupid deals at the local GC. I got my American Deluxe V-neck Strat in 2004 for 790. They had to order it from Fender because they did not have CAR in stock. They gave me a Sunburst to play for the 3 months it took to get mine in. I got my 2006 American Telecaster for 700, they had to bring it from the warehouse before I found the one that was it., fresh out of the box. Both of those were with the molded case. I got my HW1 for 490 with gigbag. These were not purchased during clearence sales. I could have gotten a brand new DRRI still in the box for 479. That is GC cost. I passed because I really don't need another amplifier. I should have gotten it anyway and turned it over but it was a senior moment.

I have tried to deal with the Manager's at both stores and they are just not going for it. I don't know if it's because of the area or what.

My local GC is very flexible. The manager there had been nothing but good to me. BUT figures, they laid him off (all the employees are pissed too) and hired some other person who probably won't work with me as well as the old one.
